Jim Croce Live, The Most Creative Writer...,

If you haven't heard Jim Croce live, now's the time. The great singer/songwriter and his partner guitarist Maury Muehleisen take it to the limit with the songs that bring back all your photographs and memories, all acoustic with no orchestration. The set starts with two of my favorites, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "Operator (that's not the way it feels)". Croce then moves on to tell the stories of how some of his written songs actually came to be. The ideas were taken from real live people, real characters, "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown", "Roller Derby Queen", "Speedball Tucker" is about a truck driver who has no trouble completing a destination at any distance, with a little help from those poppin' "west coast turn arounds", of course Jim Croce was a truck driver himself before his brief success in the music field. Listening to Jim Croce, no other songwriter could project so much reality of life, the lyrics soak deep down in your soul, always leaving a good feeling with a positive outlook, Croce's songs were that good, with a natural singing voice to match. Croce's career was cut way to short, a music man who still had alot to say. Take the opportunity to listen to this live recording, and check out "The Final Tour" recording, the audio on both compilations are excellent. Remember Jim Croce.

Before his tragic accident, Jim Croce was on his way to becoming one of the Greatest Balladeers we have had. This CD captures some of Jim's best songs and stories and provides a glimpse of the man behind the stories. If you did not get a chance to see him in a live concert, you want to get this CD and the DVD of the same name. They our both great!

This album, like all of Jim's other albums, is fantastic. He and Maury do every song justice and sound just as good as they do on studio albums. Buy this album. Right now.

I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to ordering on-line. I was pleasently suprised how easy and convenient it was shopping on amazon.com. When I had trouble placing my order I called the 1-800 # and was helped by a very courteous lady from eastern North Dakota. Really enjoy the music on the CD and the price was right too. Unique CD titles that you just can't find in stores. I am a very satisfied customer who plans on doing more business.

I ~love~ Jim Croce. It is a huge tragedy that we had him for such a short time. However, this live album has an awful version of "Working at the Car Wash Blues." If you like the original hit single, this thing will send you up the wall. You can certainly detect in the sample cut that it is not the original, but the most unpleasantly jarring bits do not occur in the sample. I am trying to make a fair allowance for the fact that it is often hard to accept anything other than the exact, well-loved original of a favorite tune, even when the one version may not be intrinsically superior to the other. But in this case, the live version is truly bad. It is like the first run-through of something newly written before it has been arranged. But it is not a fresh, rawness that comes through, but the opposite: this version is insipid as well as being actively displeasing in spots. I wish I had the musical vocabulary to express this.
I listened quickly to a couple of the other big tunes and they seemed perfectly acceptable...I might not even have noticed that they were not the studio singles. (Two stars is harsh, but I ~like~ that song! It upset me.) |
