2.0 out of 5 stars Almost no text-an Audubon "where's Waldo"
I purchased this one the grounds that it was a Caldecott winner or runner up or whatever. I was disappointed. I like the illustrations, which are of a marsh, and have some very realistic illustrations of birds, badgers, salamanders, etc. but there is almost no text. The whole idea for this book is to find the missing baby duckling on the page, someplace, as it hides...

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Enchanting. Deserves it's award, September 20, 2001

This book is filled with lovely pictures of a mother duck as she searches for her baby who wandered off.

The pictures are wonderful. The few repetitive words there are encourage my child to 'read' the book. He also loves finding the duck on every page.

I wish I could find more books like this one- simple, gorgeous pictures, a nice story with a happy ending, a lot of opportunity for other activities while you read. We find the missing duck, count the ducklings, look at the pretty colors, look for other animals and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading fun with my babies., June 24, 1999

Nancy is my cousin. So I am somewhat biased in my opinion. But I must say that I have passed this book on to all 13 of my step-grandchildren and every preschool teacher I have known. It is excellent group reading, as the children get so excited when they see the duckling and Mommy Duck doesn't. Thanks Nancy for the legacy.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this one the grounds that it was a Caldecott winner or runner up or whatever. I was disappointed. I like the illustrations, which are of a marsh, and have some very realistic illustrations of birds, badgers, salamanders, etc. but there is almost no text. The whole idea for this book is to find the missing baby duckling on the page, someplace, as it hides behind a log or whatever in the background. Sort of a "where's waldo" for a duckling. So far my one year old has not caught onto this, and seems really bored by this...

Here is the total text for the entire book, with numbers denoting pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful illustrations for children!, May 28, 1998
By A Customer
This board book was a first birthday present for my baby daughter, Kiana. We would read the book together several times a week, and I would find her "reading" it by herself, turning the pages and saying "quack quack" to the ducks. After a couple of weeks I asked Kiana, "Where is the little duckling?" and, to my wonderment, she would point it out! Even Kiana's daddy didn't find the hiding duckling as quickly as she could (the little duckling is *quite* small in some pictures). This fun, delightfully illustrated book has become one of our very favorites and ducks have become Kiana's favorite animal!

My 2 year-old loves this book. We borrowed it from the army library and now we have to buy it. My daughter loves to search for the missing duckling on each page.

This beautiful book is loved by all children. It is very simple and beautifully illustrated. The little duckling is always nearby. Your children can help find him on each page. An absolute delight. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars OK! Where's that little duck??, May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Have You Seen My Duckling? (Paperback)
This small children's book for preschoolers is about a mother duck in a wetlands area going around asking this same question of all the animals living in the wetlands. But, children are able to find the little duckling themselves. Beautifully drawn, it was a 1985 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a book for children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT "CRITTER" SEARCH BOOK FOR THE WEE ONES., September 21, 2007
This review is from: Have You Seen My Duckling? (Paperback)
What a delightful work for the very young. A Mom Duck is searching for her one "lost" duckling and searches the pond, asking the other creatures "have you seen my duckling?" Of course the duckling is not actually lost, and if you and your child look close, the duckling can be found here and there, hidden (as little ducks should be) in various locations. The kids get quite a kick out of this one as it is interactive an they must search for the little "lost" duck. The art work in this one is great and quite appearling. The simple text is repetitive and fun for the child. This is simply a fun read for the small child and a fun read for the adult reader as they help the child find the duckling. Highly recommend.
