Editorial Reviews

Overview
The second chapter of the trilogy A Triptychon of Ghosts is beautiful,
dark, and sad but there are no words to adequately describe the
enchanted music of Sopor Aeternus new release. Those familiar with
Anna-Varney Cantodea s art know that s/he (literally) plays in her own
league. The work is like the forgotten soundtrack to a fantastic gothic
horror film that was never meant for human audiences ... and this
album is certainly no exception. Building a bridge from dark chamber
music to playful frivolity, this highly anticipated second chapter in
the trilogy marvelously captures the true essence of what used to be
called goth. This is definitely the best album s/he has created so far!

A refreshing gem in a grove of coal of goth music in 2011. This is a really great album! I stumbled over Sapor Aeternus from remembering their music back in the 1990's. They have grown as a band and is clearly evident that a lot of work was put into this album. If you are fans of the Tiger Lillies, Attrition, and a darker Tom Waitts you will enjoy this album a lot. The song structures have a classical structure and an fine attention of detail to the lyrics. It's a musical journey through a twisted decayed carnival after midnight mixed with the ghost of Jack the Ripper by your side.

It's hard to explain....the artwork/photography is amazing...but the music is kinda so-so. Lots of violins, cellos, flutes, clairenets, harpsichords..I think. Verry gothic/avant-garde/darkwave. The humour is here and I find not very charming or contributive. I can't help it but this artist seems to be sincerely dark and inbtrospective...the sense of humour is just unfitting here. There are usually no "comedy" moments with this artist but sheesh...on this album there is. It's ok, but it's not the best album by Sopor Aeternus And The Ensemble Of Shadows. For fans of DEAD CAN DANCE, and CURRENT 93.

I was surprised by how original this album was, extending the themes of Les FLeurs Du Mal into new and devastating regions. The music, lyrics, and performances are stellar. Her ironic sense of humor is, I think, often underappreciated but perhaps because I can intimately relate to Varney's romantic experiences and consequent disappointments, her humor is something I can easy understand and appreciate.
