More About the Author

Kris Holechek Peters has been baking since she was old enough to make a proper mess. Taught by her great-grandmothers and aunt, the joy of providing excellent baked goods to her loved ones was always her mission and the switch to a vegan lifestyle did not stop that. Rather, it opened up a whole new world, one where the adaptation of old family recipes and the creation of new ones became both a game and a goal- a tasty, tasty goal.

When not covered in dough and melted chocolate, Kris lives in the Midwest with her kitties and she enjoys a dedicated yoga practice, studying linguistics, food science and indulging in really good espresso.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vegan made EASY! April 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
I love Kris Holecheck's other books but this one takes the cake! (pun totally intended) While I'm not vegan, or even vegetarian, the recipes in this book are easy to follow and the results are delicious. Admittedly I've used some of these recipes on my family without their prior knowledge of the ingredients and when I told them the cake they ate was vegan nobody could believe it. I think the thing I enjoy most in this book is that Kris gives you alternatives. With every recipe there are tips; if you're gluten free do this, if you don't have this type of flour try a combination of this and this. This cook book has full page pictures so you know what your final product should look like. :)
Overall I'd say this is one of the best cake books I own and every holiday and birthday will be celebrated around one of these cakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook!!! LOVE IT! April 23, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
So, I got the cookbook yesterday and also someone gave me a slow cooker (ie. crockpot). I thumbed through the book and found that there were cake recipes for slow cookers. Intrigued, I decided to make the "Slow as Apple Pie Cake". Now, I am a chocolate person and any chocolate cake would be good for me...so I made the apple cake..and WOW! It was amazing! Simply delicious and I love how the author's recipes are so outside the box.....
The book is beautiful with glossy pages and full size color pictures for every recipe. I can't wait to bake more of her recipes. I highly recommend this book. It is really neat (and as a side note, I have her first book as well--which I love, but always felt needed photos. This one is just perfect!!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars have your cake and Vegan Too! April 21, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a really beautiful cookbook with lots of wonderful pictures. I have only made 2 of the recipes so far and all I can say is YUM! I made the pineapple upside down cake and the butter cream frosting and snicker doodle cake. Both cakes were so moist and like heaven in my mouth. My husband and kids loved them! I shared the pineapple upside down cake with the neighbors that are in love with Paula Deen.....they loved it too! I can't wait to make more this weekend. There is advice and recipes for gluten free cakes, egg and dairy replacement and pantry staples for baking. Also, a nice section on trouble shooting any problems and a section on cake decorating.
I prefer to use almond milk in the recipes because soy milk in the past has made my cakes turn out more like a muffin consistency.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eaters of all kinds of diets will love this! June 24, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a must-have cookbook. There are varying levels of difficulty and cakes for all occasions. I have been vegan for about a year, but vegetarian before that for about 6 years. Even when I was "just" vegetarian, I did vegan baking almost exclusively. My husband and stepkids are vegetarian but the rest of our families are hearty omnivores. I mention this because whenever I host a family gathering I bake vegan, and if we go to another relatives house I now bring my own vegan treat. I have now converted my extended family to vegan baking! On one of the last birthday parties, one of the biggest meat-eaters of the family excitedly asked if I had made one of the cakes from this book again (I had not, I was making vegan beignets). I used to make "regular" cakes for most of the group and some vegan baking for myself and anyone who liked it and now I only bake vegan as it seems my family prefers that! I was a very experienced baker before, so I would like to think it is not because of the taste that they stopped eating my "regular" baking ;-)

Anyway, this is a great book to have (I would also suggest "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) by Isa & Terry (or really any of their cookbooks) and there are some recipes that can be made in a rice cooker in a short time - I will be making one myself tonight!

This is a fabulous cookbook. If you have a friend or family member with food allergies, and they miss beautiful, yummy desserts, this is the book for you. Since the recipes are vegan they're egg free. There are also gluten-free recipes....and they are very yummy!

Kris is a very meticulous, and whitty, writer. She's a marvelous baker as well. Ever wanted to know why your cakes sometimes "drop" in the middle, she has an answer for you. Ever wondered how to deal with all those crumbs and prevent them from being seen on your finished cake? She has an answer for that too. Beautiful pictures with the recipes, and very delicious recipes as well. My two favorites..."Dad is Great Chocolate Cake" (the name brings back lovely memories!) and "Spumoni Cake." Do yourself a favor and invest in this lovely cookbook. Personally, I'd get the actual book so you get the benefit of all the lovely pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cake cookbook! April 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
As a former vegan married to a non-vegan, when I prepare anything vegan I am most conscientious of taste and flavor. Desserts are admittedly easier (who doesn't like dessert), but still can be a challenge. Kris Holechek's newest book meets that challenge and exceeds expectations. The first recipe I tried was her Spiced Crumb Cake for weekend breakfast. My family was very impressed. So impressed that we decided to try the Chocolate Crumb Cake a few days later. Amazing. My toddlers, notorious non-eaters, devoured the Nutty 'Nana Snack Cake. I have been baking for almost thirty years and was still impressed by so many of these wonderful cakes. From the classic Dad is Great Chocolate Cake to the more sophisticated Almond Mocha Cake. Even better for those short on time is the No-Bake Cake sections. The Black Forest Crock Cake was a huge hit and so easy. Of course the book also includes a whole section of wonderful frostings and fillings. This is the third book I have on my shelf by this wonderful and talented author. I can't wait to see what she is cooking up next.
