I first found Lera Lynn through her recent amazing cover of TV on the Radio's song "Wolf Like Me" (everyone please look this one up), and in the process I downloaded another song offered free on her website, "Bobby Baby". Not only did I listen to "Wolf Like Me" countless times, I often found myself going back to the dark and mysterious "Bobby Baby" over and over again as well. Lera's album avoids many of the trappings of what most people would consider "Country" music today, instead capturing some of that raw, earthy flavor felt in days past, bringing forward passionate lyrics and a sound that you could picture coming from atop an intimate stage in a darkly lit bar, a log cabin by a river dock, or just the halls of a great sound studio. Even if you're not typically a fan of folk or country, I urge you to give this a listen or two...and I hope you'll be drawn in by Lera Lynn's soul-filled music just as I have.

Picked up "Have you met Lera Lynn?" last nite after hearing her live at the Carmel Palladium, opening for Punch Brothers. Among the cuts on this album she performed Whiskey, Gasoline, Bobby Baby. She and Ben Lewis on unamplified (no cables or pickups) acoustic guitars, no monitors, only a single mike for voices and guitars: absolutely stunning. Every note from her was perfection, and all the time achieving perfect balance of voices and guitars by both stepping into and away from the mike. Incredibly disciplined performance especially from some one so young. Not a single mis-step throughout the set. When I asked her after the show if indeed all she had was the mike and no monitors, she agreed saying:"Yeah its been a while since we have done that!" and I thought they were going for old style purity and simplicity. They ripped a tour de force with only a single mike, after only a sound check set-up. Incredible live musicianship on the fly. The last time I have been this stunned by an unknown singer was stumbling into a live solo acoustic coffee house set by John Prine 40 years ago before the launch of his first album.

Go ahead listen to this full band CD, the angelic perfect voice, timing, and vocals are not the result of many takes and studio magic. She is the real McCoy, singing mostly her own compositions. The CD starts out more country-flavored than her live performance, but the full range of genres is there showing her huge range: Country, pop, folk, rock, blues (Undertow), swing. Lovely production on the CD, kudos to Lera and CK Koch for fabulous production that let her voice seduce you with every note, perfect timing, never lost or muddied in the accompaniment. She is a talent to follow, with vocal and compositional chops that god only knows where she will go.

I was introduced to Lera Lynn at this year's Athfest in Athens, GA. Playing at the 40 Watt Club, her set was a wonderful blend of fantastic music and captivating stage presence. This of course spurred me to download her album from Amazon, and I have not been disappointed. As tight as the band is on this album, it is even more impressive to see them exhibit their craft in a live setting. I look forward to hearing more new music from this incredibly talented artist and band!

I discovered Lera Lynn in August of 2012 when she opened for KD Lang at the Chautauqua Institute. She was amazing live, and we bought her cd on the spot and have probably listened to it 80 times! Her voice is amazing, the lyrics are interesting and reminiscent of another era, and the production is spot on- spare and sometimes haunting. I have never written a review on Amazon but I feel like an evangelist for this girl! I want more people to discover her!
