Book Description

Katie finds that the town of Haven is not what it seems as she continues her journey across the strange world of Desolace, searching for her friend, Julie. During her travels Katie makes new friends, but also makes a horrifying discovery. The creatures that she thought to exist only in myths and legends, while she grew up on Earth, are very real on this world! The only bright spot is a message that Katie receives from Julie, but the message is filled with a sense of urgency. Will she find Julie in time? Or will the darkness of this world consume Julie first, leaving only a useless husk of flesh behind?

Haven by Lucian Barnes

3 Stars

Following on from Desolace, Haven continues the story of Katie's hunt for her missing friend Julie.

This book is definitely an easier read than Desolace. The story is not disjointed and has less waffle than it's predecessor. The problem I had with book one was that it started off as a really good thriller but then in a surprise twist the paranormal aspect was introduced. I have nothing against paranormal, but for me the way it was woven in didn't work well and kind of spoiled the story for me.

The difference here is that from the out set it is clear that the storyline centers around a different dimension with ghosts and supernatural beings, so we know from the start what we are getting. Lucian's writing skills have also improved, he has reduced the amount of overwritten scenes of mundane actions that slow the pace to a crawl, and has increased the amount of show not tell that aid tension building and feeling.

I can see how much growth this writer has shown between book one and two of this series and can only imagine that as he works on book three, his gained experience and reader feed back will only prove to help him produce an even better piece of work. I look forward to reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars book 2 Haven December 21, 2012
By Kadie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is alot better than book 1, it shows ALOT of growth by the author. I love how the author has taken the feedback and made himself a better author with it instead of quitting. I am anxious to see what happens in book 3. Much better at keeping the characters on track and not a giggling brat. I hope to read more from this author!

Haven: Desolace II by Lucian Barnes

I liked Haven better than Desolace, the first book in the series, in fact, I loved it!
Second books are often difficult to write, not so for Lucian Barnes, his characters have filled out nicely, and the story is unfolding beautifuly. I am emotionally invested in Katie and Edward. Love the mix of village life versus a futuristic horrorable life for some poor unfortunate people. So many surprises along the way, and Katie’s journey takes its’ toll on the people around her. Even Edward falters and wonders which path to take. I see so many possibilities for the journey ahead, and I look forward to see where the road will take Katie and Edward. There is so much more I want to tell you about Haven, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise.
I was given this ebook in return for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another interesting installment December 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
After reading Desolace, I couldn't help but want to see what happens to the characters in this story. Just as I predicted, the author's writing does improve, giving greater detailed scenes and character development and less "telling" throughout each scene. I love the unique fantasy/paranormal aspect of the author's story line and really appreciated the faster pace of this book. Although some of the scenes are still a bit muddled and overwritten, the writer IS growing in his style and continues to improve in each book. This unique story line definitely has great potential. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment (which better be released SOON!!) :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT book! December 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow! I was really impressed with Haven. It was so much better than Desolace was. With Haven you are more in the world of Desolace and you get a feel of everything.

Haven picks up where Desolace left off. Katie and her friends are still searching for her friend Julie who was abducted by Mr. M, their old school bus driver who has been dubbed "The Headhunter" by authorities because of what he does with his victims. He is now working for someone called The Black Knight and is abducting people in this other world to go and work at the factory.

While Katie is on her mission to find Julie she also has a mission to fight and defeat The Black Knight with the help of others. She needs a magician who is Edward, a healer, and a warrior named Mike. How are they suppose to defeat him they do not know, but with all of them working together they should be able to stop him before it is too late.
Katie learns that her best friend is alive but for how long? Will she get to her in time?
I did get one little chuckle out of this whole book the part where George enters into a town which was 33% into the book:
"It was so quiet where he stood that if a mouse were to suddenly fart, the noise of it would be deafening." That honestly had me chuckling a bit to where my husband looked at me very weirdly. Thanks for that little bit of humor in the book.
Haven is action packed from start to send, you will meet new characters, new enemies, myths that will come alive and the ending will have you wanting to read more in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy at its best! December 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A strong heroine, awesome narration, unique voice, and vivid dialogue make this book the "perfect" read.

After the first few chapters, the stage is set for a rip-roaring supernatural thriller that will keep you anxiously turning the pages. Our heroine, Katie hunts for Julie and will stop at nothing. Katie dives into a supernatural world that kept me glued to my kindle screen for hours. This author delivers an adrenalin pumping thriller and spellbinding tale with vampires and werewolves that will leave you howling for more. And I won't even get into the 'bugs'! Especially beetles!

I really enjoyed the main character, Katie. The author creates a distinct world for the reader filled with mind-blowing scenes, mystery, and a colorful mix of characters.

This thriller totally held my attention. I can't wait to read the next book! I give this book 5 stars without a doubt and will definitely read more from this talented author.
