Book Description

2000
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was idyllic rolling farmland back in the early nineteen-forties. Then a young couple with a small budget and big ideas settled in. They opened a little business beside Route 30. How, they wondered could they get all those passing travelers to stop for a while and share their money with them. Good food was one idea, exploiting the local Amish culture was even better. This book depicts the gains and losses that these decisions made, both to the area and their family. Such were in no small part responsible for one fiery episode.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

It has been both fun and painful reliving the early events of my life. I believe others will find it interesting to see how the promotion of tourism changed the Lancaster County area as well as my own family. The family business, Dutch Haven, flourished while inwardly I blamed it for many of the troubles that affected my own life. It grieves me that my involvement in the Amish schoolhouse fire caused hurt to such innocent people. It is my hope that this public apology in some way atones for this misdeed.

About the Author

Janetmae Weaver is a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania but has also resided in New York, Tennessee, Mississippi and Florida. As of this writing she and her husband are happily living in Florida. Although she would have loved to spend her life writing, living took up most of her time. She has worn many hats in order to support herself, from serving tables to managing businesses. Janetmae has written for newspapers and magazines, both prose and poetry. Much of her writing comes from colorful experiences in her own life, as does this, her first book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, you won't put it down., September 21, 2000
This review is from: Haven or Hex (Paperback)
This sensitive and touching book is presented in such an easy style I just couldn't put it down. The photos, drawings and images intermingled throughout the book helped the reader `picture' the scene, especially those not native to North America.

I have long been fascinated with the lifestyle of the Amish community and although this book is about one woman's story about growing up in Pennsylvania it presents the reader with interesting insight into Amish way of life.

It takes a great deal of courage to bare all to your reader especially about taboo subjects and to present it in a sensitive yet matter of fact manner. We all have the odd proverbial skeleton in our cupboard for which we would like to forget or atone; these are the things that make us human, none of us can turn back time, Janetmae doesn't waste time trying.

She must have cried buckets remembering the past to bring us her story, I appreciated her effort and tenacity, I am sure others will too.

This book deals with the first part of Janetmaes' life when's the next instalment?
