Book Description

December 1, 2000
Through detailed information, personal experience, and actual examples, "A Safe Haven?" discusses common hazards in the home as well as other critical topics that are often unrecognized and overlooked. "A Safe Haven?" is written for for anyone with concerns about environmental hazards in their home and community or for anyone that is purchasing a new home. This book is also a reference tool for real estate agents, attorneys, insurers, lenders, contractors, and developers - allowing recognition of the risks and liabilities associated with environmental hazards. In a straightforward and informative way the reader is presented with each area of concern, the problems that can be encountered, the health and monetary consequences, relevant purchase contract issues, and clear direction on what to look for, what to avoid, and what actions can be taken to reduce or eliminate risks. Topics include: radon, underground and aboveground tanks, drinking water quality, asbestos, lead-based paint, indoor air quality and air pollution, hazardous waste and contaminated sites, performing risk assessments, property investigation methods, impacts to property values, evaluating historical uses of property, evaluating community hazards, conducting surveys and assessing the health effects on families. Also included are over 40 illustrations and tables, a glossary of more than 80 terms, a complete index, and a detailed home and community survey questionnaire.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

If you are purchasing a new home or have concerns about the environmental situation in your existing home, this book is for you. It covers specific environmental issues, including radon, lead, indoor and outdoor air quality, drinking water, storage tanks, and asbestos. Schultze, the principle geologist for an environmental consulting firm, explains the sources of contamination, the magnitude of the problem, and the health risks to owners and their families. He advises readers how to investigate the environmental history of a property, assess and evaluate the hazards, and consider the financial consequences of environmental pollution in homes and communities. Readers will find practical and workable solutions to avoid, reduce, or eliminate hazards so that they can truly enjoy a safe haven at home. The appendix contains a home survey checklist and glossary. Tables, diagrams, statistical facts, and illustrations accompany the text. All parties involved in home buying and selling should consult this fact-filled guide before closing the deal. Recommended for all public libraries. Irwin Weintraub, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., New York

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!!, February 24, 2001
This review is from: A Safe Haven? A Homeownership Guide to Assessing Environmental Hazards (Hardcover)
This book, A Safe Haven? is a must have for anyone who is looking into buying, building or owns a home. It not only defines in a understandale manner different types concerns to be aware of (such as asbestos, radon, lead and underground tanks), but it guides the reader to questions that should be asked to the original owner of the house as well. It definitely informed me about many things that I was not aware of, and would not even think to be concerned about, yet are very critical to know. I read this book before closing on my house, and it made my husband and I forewarned about certain potential situations rather than forearmed with lots of unexpected work and bills!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for Homeowners!, February 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Safe Haven? A Homeownership Guide to Assessing Environmental Hazards (Hardcover)
This book not only brought to my attention the many hidden and common hazards associated with owning a home, but it was written in a clear and concise way for the layperson to understand. With the environmental dangers increasing in our world today, the topic is one we can no longer ignore or depend on others to take responsibility for. The health and safety of our families is always one of our greatest concerns and "A Safe Haven" thankfully points out ways in which we can eliminate or at least reduce the possibility of harm to those we live with and love. By educating yourself for a minimal cost, you can avoid much larger expenses in the long-term. Also a necessity for anyone associated with the house building process.
