"Coudn't Put it Down!!!" - If you're looking for a good book to read, that's not a billion pages then I would definitely recommend Haven: A Stranger Magic by DC Akers! When I first started this book, I was hooked from the opening sentence! I would recommend to any Harry Potter fan or just a fan of Fantasy/Fiction/Suspense!
Sam and Sarah's characters are well developed so that you feel like you get to know them. I would love to spend a day with these characters! I enjoy this fantasy/fiction genre and really wanted to get to know Sam, Travis and Sarah and the mysteries that they uncover. The fight as siblings, but understandable since all siblings fight. Something strange awaits outside. As Sam dreams he's running from something that is dark and unseen. He hears his sister Sarah, but doesn't see her anywhere around. Suspense, magic and more await you. " - LittleAngleOnAMission

From the Author

"This series is more than just an adventure; it's about self-sacrifice and overcoming tragedy. It's about Sam leaving behind the person he thinks he is and becoming the hero he was meant to be. People tend to forget that most heroes are forged from great suffering and Sam Dalcome is no different."

3.0 out of 5 stars Saves the big reveal for the end and it works! August 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
(Disclaimer: I received one or more of the products mentioned below for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.)

When it comes to fantasy fiction I'm not averse to picking up lighter, swifter reads aimed at the teen set. I love anything strange and different! Haven: A Stranger Magic is a fantasy fiction novella that introduces us to thirteen-year-old Sam, a boy so completely average he feels invisible and useless. However, things change for Sam when he begins having strange nightmares and a mysterious stranger appears (and disappears) in the street outside his home. Now Sam is about to find out that he's far from average.

I wasn't expecting to really like a book with a teen male protagonist--not really my preferred POV, for obvious reasons--but this book sucked me in. It's fast-paced but doesn't rush you into the magic part of things; in fact, the biggest magic "reveal" doesn't happen until the very end of the book. I think one of the trickiest parts of writing about magic is steadily dosing your audience without dragging your feet or rushing them too quickly, and this book strikes the right balance between "hmm, things are getting weird" and "whoa, magic!".

The only thing that really interrupted the narrative (for me) was the way characters are described; the book is written in the third person but mostly comes from Sam's POV, and most teenage boys I know aren't going to note, in detail, the outfit an older sister is wearing or the haircut of a friend. That little rumple aside, the story flows by really quickly until the end.

I have a vivid imagination when reading books so this one got me really excited. Even the first few pages were so fast-paced that my heart raced while Sam was running through the forest! The relief was temporary when he woke up but I knew that something was up because he was having a recurring dream! That alone drove me to read through the book, perusing every detail just to uncover what it was that he was constantly dreaming about!

Quite an excellent book with a whole lot of twists and mysteries that drive me to turn the pages until I reached the end! No spoiler here ;) Read the book for yourself as I won't be revealing any details but you have to watch out for unexpected twists! Warning: this book can be addicting. I was not able to put it down until I reached the very end. I'm fond of predicting endings but I wasn't able to predict this one correctly. Certainly a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this one!!! June 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Something strange awaits outside. As Sam dreams he's running from something that is dark and unseen. He hears his sister Sarah, but doesn't see her anywhere around.

Strange things are happening and neither child seems to understand what's going on.

They argue constantly, like most siblings do.

When Sam wakes, from the dream, or was it really a dream, he's soaked and his sister thinks he's ran a marathon from how drenched he is. Was it really a dream? Was it something of the unexplained?

I have to say that I honestly recommend this book for anyone that loves the Harry Potter series as this just may be another wonderful series to make with it. You gotta read this one. I would also recommend this for preteens and maybe even younger teens. I'm 34 and love the book myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Haven is known for being a world of magic. It is a refuge for all types of supernatural beings. Witches.. Vampires.. Goblins.. Elves.. Orcs.. It has been a place of peace for so many years. But that is all about to end. Dark deeply hidden secrets are coming to the surface. And this is leaving the door open for a dark and evil that has been laying in wait in the shadows.

OK guys he had me at witches & vampires, but add the rest to the book.. I LOVE action packed books with mystery, magic & the supernatural.

A Stranger Magic ( Book 1 )

Sam thinks he is just a normal average guy that no one really notices. A stranger shows up in town & seems interested in Sam or Sam's family. He truly thought that his sister Sarah wished he would just go away. But he finds out that Sarah isn't feeling "right" about herself or their situation either.
One night he wakes up from a odd strange type of dream, he looks out his window and there stands a man. Is this man watching him? Is this man real? Or is he a dream? And if he is watching him WHY? He needs to know this so he & his friend Travis head out on an investigation to find out who this man is. And what he was doing outside Sam's house staring at his window.
Sam & his friend Travis find a passage. Not just any passage, but one that is very well hidden. When they start exploring this passage they find out that his family has a very deadly & dark secret.

Ok ~ let me tell you, this book will grab your attention from the first page until the end. You can feel yourself there with Sam, Sarah, Travis & Alisa. I love all things supernatural, dark, evil & good. Can not wait for the 2nd book

I am hooked like a fat kid on chocolate cake. I LOVE the way D.C.Akers bring all the characters alive. You feel like you know them and that they are real & you are there with them watching this all unfold. I hope he continues with this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars It is just a prologue, folks, not a novel.
This is not a badly written novel; that is not the problem. It is just a prologue to a novel. It does not have a plot to speak of, and it certainly has no resolution. Read more

More About the Author

Like many who enjoy the fantasy genre, Akers started reading it as an adolescent. He was fascinated with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Bram Stoker's Dracula. He currently enjoys reading works by Dean Koontz, Heather Brewer, J.K. Rowling, and Rick Riordan.

Akers enjoys creating a fantasy world with compelling storylines, while injecting humor and a touch of drama into the action as he did with his first book Terra Vonnel and the Skulls of Aries, which has received rave reviews.

"I start every story with this thought: Where can I take my audience now? To me it's about the journey, the escape into a world filled with the fantastic and the unexpected. There is nothing like an adventure that takes you further from reality with every turn of the page."

D.C. Akers was born in Texas and after spending several years working in accounting, Akers began to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a writer.
