Operational History of Early British Fighter jets, December 5, 2009
This review is from: De Havilland Twin-Booms (Crowood Aviation) (Hardcover)
This is another of the very fine Crowood Aviation Series books. It traces the early development & use of jet engines before/during WW2, evolution of British jet fighters leading up to the Vampire (1946), Venom (1950) and Sea Vixen (1957). These planes served up until 1984 with 30 differnt nations.
The book has a lot of techincal information, facts, statistics, data that capture each version of the twin boom fighters. Many clear B&W photos show the plane in all stages of development, in all theaters and varients.
Usually, Crowood books have a lot of stories from the pilots who flew the planes. Not so here, but the real reason I gave four stars - no color. At this price, there should be color photos and even color plates to show the camoflague schemes used. Also no cut-aways of the planes.
A good book, very informative, not recommended for modelers or casual plane buffs. For those seriously interested in this era of Jet plane development, especially British, this is a good addition to your collection.
