Editorial Reviews

This CD consists of two albums on CD for the first time,
recorded by composer Hoagy Carmichael in the late 1950s, where
he sings some of his best old and new songs for young and old.

No complaints. Just wish it could've been shrink wrapped. I'm sending one as a gift and it makes a big difference in appearance!

4.0 out of 5 stars One Title, But Two Albums September 2, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My friends at Sepia Records, over there in The United Kingdom, have seen fit to release two Hoagy Carmichael albums in one, namely "Havin' A Party" and "Ole Buttermilk Sky". As a longtime Hoagy fan, this has made me very, very happy and here is a review for the both of them.

"Havin' A Party": Had never heard of this release until I surfed around the Amazon site a month or so ago. It was recorded back in November of 1957, all songs written and narrated by Hoagy with backing by The Arthur Norman Chorus and Orchestra. Beyond that, I didn't know what to expect.

Well, it turns out that...yes...old Hoagy is indeed having a party and he has opened up his door to the neighborhood children who, no doubt, were greeted by the heavenly scent of freshly baked chocolate cake. But sorry girls, this is a boy's only party, specifically Paul, Ron, Rick and Knuckles. The boys proceed to give narration and some vocal backing to Hoagy as he sings songs that are aimed at a much younger generation. Actually, the boys sound a little too squeaky clean for my blood, except for Knuckles, who was a no-show and according to the song "Small Fry" was most likely a real JD (juvenile delinquent). "My, my," Hoagy sings, "Put down that cigarette. You ain't a grown up, high and mighty, yet." But don't get me wrong, this was actually one of the few songs that I liked on "Havin' A Party". I also enjoyed hearing an older Hoagy Carmichael sing a couple of his earlier hits, "Lazybones" and "Two Sleepy People". "Stardust" is also included but it's not the classic version. It is a one minute narration with musical accompaniment.

When most of the boys leave, Hoagy launches into the song "Comrades" and I thought I knew where he was going with it, but I was wrong.
