5.0 out of 5 stars Great childbirth stories!, August 13, 2001
This review is from: Having a Baby: Mothers Tell Their Stories (Paperback)
If you enjoy stories about childbirth experiences, this book is for you. I have re-read this book about 100 times and have lent it out several times. The most interesting stories are the earliest stories--those of women who gave birth in the early 1900's, but all of the stories are compelling and great. I read this before the birth of my baby and, of course, afterward as well. The book demonstrates a historical perspective on childbirth as well--from home births because hospitals didn't exist as they do now, to medical interventions like 'twilight sleep,' and back around the loop to more autonomy in childbirthing. It's just a great book! I would love to have this author write another book with even more birthing stories in it. It's fascinating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Expectant mother should read this book, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Having a Baby: Mothers Tell Their Stories (Paperback)
I LOVE this book! Every pregnant woman should read this book.

It's not a how to, instruction manual. Simply easy to read stories, womens stories. It's the story of motherhood passed down through the last century. Birth should be a womans experience and this book let's you "see", how it has been changed from a womens event, to a medical experiment, and how we can take control again.

It does not instruct you, just lets you see, and make up your own mind. It changed my perception of the events around me, and allowed me to take charge knowing what could and should be different.

I would give this book to every pregnant mother I care about if it were still in print. I have purchased and shared several copies with other moms.
