Book Description

July 1, 2005
Joe Dobson left his wife and kids when his girlfriend, Nina, discovered she was pregnant. Now he feels like a cliché, and Nina feels like a drudge. So when Joe announces that he’s booked a luxury holiday in Tuscany, Nina is thrilled—until she realizes that Joe’s kids are coming along for the ride. Guy Jamieson is sure this will be his last family holiday. He plans to leave his wife, Alice, and their two sons on his return. Alice—with her elasticized skirts and inedible dinners—just doesn’t fit Guy’s self-image. But Alice has a secret plan of her own—to have another baby. This is a cleverly observed tale of modern family life, love, and adultery.

Jenny Eclair’s second novel firmly attacks the myth of happy families with characteristic acerbic humor. -- Observer

1.0 out of 5 stars Having A Lovely Time by Jenny Eclair., April 8, 2011
This review is from: Having a Lovely Time (Paperback)
Having A Lovely Time was at times wickedly funny and had the potential to be a good read BUT for me it was spoilt by the use of crude (and at times really crude) language and an ending that I found both shocking and harrowing - not to go into great details but the concluding chapters included an act I found totally abhorrent and yet because it was committed by a woman (Alice), the victim being her drunken, semi-conscious husband (Guy), as opposed to the other way around there seemed to be the feeling that this was acceptable. What was the author thinking?

1.0 out of 5 stars Nasty, June 9, 2008

This review is from: Having a Lovely Time (Paperback)
This book is simply a sticky, stinky, yucky blob of nastyness. By golly, there isn't a single pleasurable character in the whole book, and the one I'd save, poor Alice, well, it's the ultimate victim of the author's nastiest joke. I was disgusted by the extravagant largesse of four letter world the author bestowes on the unlucky reader,to say nothing of the profusion of disgusting body function's detailed descriptions. Foul and nasty, nasty, nasty,

3.0 out of 5 stars This one grew on me!, June 17, 2008

At first I did not think I would like this book and it took a while to get used to the lingo. The characters were pretty funny and the way they all came together in Italy was interesting. I would try another book by this author.
