My first encounter with Michener,
By
This review is from: Hawaii (Hardcover)
Hawaii was my first encounter with James Michener. I read the paperback edition while waiting for my ride to work in th 1950's. I later lent the book to a coworker, who lost it and graciously bought me a replacement. Things were so correct and polite then. I saw "Tales of the South Pacific" on Broadway with Mary Martin and then tried to read every Michener novel that came along, because they fascinated me with their blending of history, geography and human sketches to fill in the pictures for a history-avoiding scientist. I have since given my extra copies to my brotheer, but have no feedback. Michener's Museum in Pennsylvania is not far and should be visited if opportunity presents."Hawaii" starts 40 million years ago, with the formation of the islands and the migration of life from the western islands. Migration of humans from Bora Bora was followed by those from New England, starving villages of China, and Hawaii: A Novelfarm villages of Japan. A new type of human was thought to have been conceived. This has not been realized, but Michener's visions are deeper than those we read of today and I am glad to revisit them occasionally.Hawaii: A Novel
