More About the Author

Easy, inexpensive and quick to make, most patterns are made using just chain stitch. Each lei costs about 59 cents to make, since you can make 5-6 lei with each skein of yarn. I love Bernat Softee Chunky http://www.bernat.com in GRASS (medium yellow-green) for the stem chain, and Bernat Softee Chunky NATURAL (off-white) for the petals. This lei looks like pikake. Many people take a second glance or assume the lei is real flowers, until they discover it was made using a simple yarn technique.

We participate in hula festivals, workshops, demonstrate techniques in Hawaii, on the West Coast and in Asia. email info to: wongc015@hawaii.rr.com

Born and raised in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii. Of Japanese, Chinese, English, Irish, Scots, German, Swedish heritage. Learned to crochet from Chinese grandmother at about 9 years old. Learned to read crochet instruction books since grandma liked to travel a lot. Looked for ways to make Hawaiian lei, developed techniques with the help of talented aunts and relatives who were proficient at handwork. Combined and modified petal patterns contained in "99 flowers to crochet", with technique of attaching petal patterns to central chain. Have fun with these simple, easy to follow instructions. Aloha, Roberta

This review is from: Hawaiian Lei in Crochet (Spiral-bound)
This book just so fantastic and very easy to follow. I have never come acroos this book here in the Mainland. Only when my daughter who lives in Oahi, Hawaii sent me this book as a Mother's Day gift did I learn of such crocheted Hawaiian Leis and I tell you, I started crocheting the very day I got the book and was very pleased with my finished projects... Looks just like the Leis in the pictures. Thank you... another crochet world had been opened to me.

If you are looking for an inexpensive craft that yields great results, this is the book for you. The projects are beautiful, and the supplies are easy to find. The leis can also easily be adapted to garlands for decorating. (I crocheted a very long lei in red and green, didn't join the ends, and wrapped it around my bannister as a Christmas decoration. Compliments abounded.)

My thanks to Roberta Wong for a wonderful book!
