3.0 out of 5 stars The Hawaiian Quilt - A Spiritual Experience, August 17, 2005
This review is from: Hawaiian Quilt: A Spiritual Experience (Paperback)
If you were expecting a book of hawaiian quilting patterns, you will not be pleased. What this book does is provide a very comprehensive explanation of the history of the hawaiian quilt and the meanings of the patterns. It is lacking in providing specific measurements for the background and foreground fabric squares and enlargements of the patterns. One of the major problems with this book is it is only 6" x 9" and the few patterns included in the book are printed through the spine of the book so you cannot transfer the pattern onto paper without being able to draw. I'm also not sure how you get a 6" long pattern to be large enough to cut a single design from it the size of a kingsized quilt for your foreground motif. This book addresses the old tradition of hawaiian quilting which is similar to our whole cloth quilting today. Modern hawaiian quilting has gone to a multitude of 20" squares, each of a different pattern, sewn together to make a bed quilt. Because this book is so small and the patterns depicted are intended for bed sized quilts, I'm not sure this book would be of use to a novice hawaiian quilter for more than it's historical information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short but interesting..., October 25, 2005

This review is from: Hawaiian Quilt: A Spiritual Experience (Paperback)
This brief book gives a few interesting insights into the spiritual significance of certain aspects of Hawaiian quilt design. It would have been nice to see more examples explained this way, and to have included more traditional examples in addition to the authors' own designs.
