This is a wonderful anthology of early writers about Hawaii with an introduction by James Michener. Some of the more known classical writers are here like Maugham, James Jones, Stevenson, and two of my favorite writers, Jack London and Mark Twain. The stories provide an informal and lyrical history of Hawaii from primitive, tribal times to the present. It is obvious that the writers liked Hawaii and often spent extra time on their travels. It was interesting to me that Jack London encouraged the return of surfing, and we know that Michener brought the history of the missionaries and the Mother Hubbard dresses to the islands. I enjoyed the stories of Laura Fish Judd, F.A. Olmstead and Isabella Bird which I hadn't read before. Buy a copy before you go to Hawaii on your next vacation.
