This review is from: Hawaiian Yesterdays: Historical Photographs (Hardcover)
I was thrilled to find this wonderful out-of-print book on the photography of Ray Jerome Baker. In his long life (1880-1972) Baker photographed Hawaii from the days of the Kingdom through the Territorial Era and into early statehood. No one who is interested in Hawaiian history can have missed his work. "Hawaiian Yesterdays" compiles hundreds of Baker's photos into a terrifically readable volume. I just wish the paper used by the publisher (Mutual Publishing Company, Honolulu) had a slicker photographic finish. The photographs do not have the detail and sharpness evident in the few photos printed on the front and back of the dust jacket. It's disappointing that a book on photography wouldn't use photo finish paper.Still, anyone interested in Old Hawaii should find this book irresistible. Don't pass it up just because of the less than optimum printing - the photos are stunning! |
