From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-A well-written, fast-moving murder mystery set in contemporary Aspen, CO. Sixteen-year-old Will Lansa is a football hero in the throes of discovering more about his Hopi heritage as begun in Prophecy Rock (S & S, 1995). He is also the last person known to have seen his girlfriend, Myra, alive. No body has been discovered, but Will finds himself at the center of the investigation. Interesting, believable teen and adult characters and fast-paced action make this novel a real bridge to adult murder mysteries. The resemblance to Tony Hillerman's books is great, not just because Will's father is a policeman on the reservation (in this case the Hopi reservation), but also in the heightened mood, respectful tone, and elegant pace that smoothly integrate matters of culture, religion, and contemporary life in the western United States. Of special interest here, too, is the adept portrayal of the school computer-lab milieu, integrating a subplot about e-mail, computer ethics, and the self-described computer nerds who inhabit this e-world. One of them, a girl named Corey, is reminiscent of Robert Cormier's "Avenger" in We All Fall Down (Dell, 1993) in her secret, impassioned adoration of the protagonist, but here she becomes a key, positive player in the resolution. While the identity of the murderer may not be a big surprise, getting there is definitely half the fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a teen mystery with a male protagonist!, December 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hawk Moon (Laurel-Leaf Books) (Mass Market Paperback)
Will Lansa is not your typical high school football hero. He proves to be a sensitive young man who relies on his Hopi heritage to help him solve the murder of his girlfriend. This novel provided a good balance of teen problems regarding heritage, romance, drug abuse, and friendships. I would highly recommend that all of you kids who like a good suspenseful mystery read this one. (I am an English teacher, so I love recommending good reads!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a good teen suspense book, October 18, 2001
This review is from: Hawk Moon (Hardcover)
Finally a book that has good suspense, horror, and mystery while at the same time dealing with teen issues (drugs,etc.). Rob MacGregor delivers a very well-written book that doesn't sink into the characters' heads, but simply narrates the story. There's not much to say but that it is extremely good. =)
