Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In the best of worlds, the tarted-up presentation Lake is given here (there are two additional subtitles) would be unnecessary to draw attention to her sincere, open-hearted account of initiation into the ways of Indian medicine. Of Yurok and Karuk (Northern Californian) heritage, Lake is everything she claims to be: a hereditary shaman trained in the arduous traditional way. She is also a modern Indian, living with the sociological problems of reservation life, which include the selling-off and selling-out of Native spiritual ways to a public more eager to wear dream-catcher earrings than to fast, abstain, and endure physical hardship. Here, she weaves autobiography, spiritual counsel, and political commentary effectively and engagingly, and her earthy voice makes even the most extraordinary events solidly believable. She has seen powerful spirits and healed desperate people, and she provides not only a stirring narrative of these circumstances but also a complete spiritual context in which to understand them. 5.0 out of 5 stars Hawk woman dancing with the moon was great !, July 2, 2000

This review is from: Hawk Woman Dancing with the Moon: Sacred Medicine for Today's Woman (Paperback)
I liked Hawk woman dancing with the moon a lot , because it tells you a lot about indian culture and also gives practical instructions if you're interested in moon-ceremonies , for example . Tela Star Hawk Lake talks about her own life (how she became a shaman , different ceremonies , her family ,...) , the life as an indian today and hundreds of years ago , her tribe and tells legends . All in all , I can really recommend this book to anyone that is interested in indian culture ! It's novel and informative book at the same time .

4.0 out of 5 stars Freaky owls, activism, and triumph over negativity, July 13, 2001

Tessa (Arcata, CA) - See all my reviews
Since i am a Northwest transplant and OBSESSED with native american spirituality i was siked to read this book by a Yurok medicine woman. She gives some sorely needed insight into women's moontime ceremonies, herbs (ANGELICA!), and the meaning of some friendly and foelike animal spirits all over the country. Since i already fell in love with Sioux medicine people, my heart sang when she told of meeting Lame Deer and others, participating in a Sundance, and recieving full healing the Lakota way. I ate this book up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book on Native Medicine Woman and Healing., January 17, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While this book is essentially designed for women I believe it is equally useful for men. Tela shares her life experience as an Medicine Woman in the modern world, she shares her struggles and her many blessings. This book is a good companion to those written by her husband Bobby Lake Thom, aka "Medicine Grizzly Bear. This is a must read for anybody studying the Native American Medicine path.
