Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Kamentsky spent three years in Jews for Jesus, including some time as a staff member and missionary, an experience that she looks back on with loathing and some hard-earned self-awareness. At its best, this book is a portrait of Jews for Jesus as a group that combines the worst aspects of cult behavior and Reagan-era grabbiness. Unfortunately, she is so close to the emotional tensions of that period of her life that much of the book has a hectoring, shrill tone, weakened by relentlessly negative characterizations from the outset; the reader quickly begins to wonder why she joined in the first place. Regrettably, the answer to that question is unsatisfying. Though Kamentsky explains how a frenzied life in New York City left her with a spiritual void, the one instance of moral hypocrisy she encountered at a community seder fails to account for why she turned to Christianity to fill it. On the positive side, she tellingly limns the group's obsessive drive to make more and more converts. But as Kamentsky tells of her rise up the "corporate" ladder, the book begins to resemble a confessional by a burnt-out yuppie climber. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal

In 1986, Kamentsky, disillusioned with traditional Judaism and discouraged by unemployment, left both to become a staff member of Jews for Jesus (JFJ). Moving from the East Coast to Los Angeles, she worked for the JFJ until 1989, when, having become disillusioned with it as well, she returned to traditional Judaism, her parents, and the East Coast. Unfortunately, much of this work deals not with Kamentsky's "ordeal" as an employee of JFJ but with her ambivalent family relationship. This personal emphasis, along with the author's overdramatic tone, tends to create a soap-opera effect throughout. Indeed, Appendix B, a formulaic "Worker's Covenant" between Kamentsky and the JFJ, reveals more about the nature of that organization than the preceding 90 percent of this book. Libraries should consult Juliene Lipson's Jews for Jesus (AMS, 1990) for a more objective treatment. Not recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Revelaton on Jews for Jesus, January 15, 2002
This review is from: Hawking God: A Young Jewish Woman's Ordeal in Jews for Jesus (Paperback)
This very personal account of nice-Jewish-girl Ellen's years as a missionary in Jews for Jesus reveals the power, control, and decpetion that can be found in such groups, and the difficulty in breaking away. Kamentsky's writing is balanced while remaining honest and self-revealing. For anyone who deals with cults, cult-like groups, and invasive religious missioniaries "saving" Jewish souls, this quick read is well-worth seeking out in a used copy or at a library and then sharing with parents, teenagers, clergy, and friends. Ultimately, her story is an inspiring one of her family's love and the finding of a faith.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good expose of the Messianic/J4J Cult, January 4, 2001
This review is from: Hawking God: A Young Jewish Woman's Ordeal in Jews for Jesus (Paperback)
As a Jewish person active in Zionism and Anti Missionary efforts, I quite enjoyed this book. The author is a former cult member/victim of Mity Mo (Moshie Mosen) and his J4J cult. Although she does not go into the detail I would have favoured, she does a good job exposing the lies, brainwashing techniques and other efforts they use.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book! All true! (From another Ex Jew for Jesus), July 28, 2002
This review is from: Hawking God: A Young Jewish Woman's Ordeal in Jews for Jesus (Paperback)
This book is great and every detail is true!

I am a former Jews for Jesus missionary. I worked with Ellen...

HAWKING GOD is the only book out that gives details on what it was like to really work for Jews for Jesus. Recently, Ex Jews for Jesus staff have begun to write our stories, and soon our stories will be available in published form, but at this time, Ellen's book is vital and must be read.

I highly recommend this book!
