Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Hawking HPS1U USB 10/100 Print Server is a powerful and convenient tool to connect your USB printer to a 10/100M Network. The Hawking H-PS1U, combined with the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), lets you easily connect to any printer and print documents by specifying the print server's IP address. With IPP technology, printing over a WAN or the Internet becomes much easier. You can send a print job to a printer in another country just as easily as sending a print job to your home or office printer. IPP eliminates the need for fax communications between offices by simply printing an original document over the Internet and sending it from one office to another without the degradation of image and text quality that fax machines produce. Why use a fax to send information from office to office when you can print your documents directly from your computer to another out-of-office printer?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great gadget-got to know where to look for Mac support, June 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hawking Technology HPS1U 1 Port USB Internet Print Server (Personal Computers)
I bought this to use my Epson Stylus Photo 820 on my ethernet router network with my new iMac (OS X 10.2 Jaguar) and my IBM laptop (W98SE)
Of course the product worked gret on the IBM but I had trouble with the configuration on my beloved Mac.
Instructions were available online but didn't work.
I emailed Hawking's tech support and got the standard instructions.
When I e-mailed back and told them the exact printer I was using, they sent me instructions on downloading and installing GIMP Print & ESP Ghostprint which worked great and was free. Here's the link and instructions for anyone with the same problem. Overall, great little device and gret price! Good luck

1) Install Mac printer drivers
o On the Mac, insert the Epson installer CD and install drivers
o Check Epson Web site for driver updates for the Mac
o Install the newer Epson drivers (CD: v1.3, HP Web site: v2.1)
o grab Hawking PDF docs to Mac also
o Note, this standard setup will fail to add this networked printer
in MacOS X. You must install GIMP print.

2) Install and config GIMP Print
o http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
o get Gimp-Print
o get ESP Ghostscript
o install ESP Ghostscript
o install GIMP Print
RESTART
o open "Applications:Utilities:Print Center"
o click 'Add' (to add a new printer)
o select 'IP Printing' from the upper pop-down
o enter print server ip address in 'Printer Address'
o deselect 'Use default queue on server'
o enter 'lp1' as 'Queue Name'
o Select 'Epson' from 'Printer Model'
o Select Epson series, CUPS+Gimp-Print v4.2.5' from 'Model Name'

1.0 out of 5 stars piece of junk, May 15, 2005
This review is from: Hawking Technology HPS1U 1 Port USB Internet Print Server (Personal Computers)
An awful lot of the Hawking equipment at Fry's had "returned item" stickers on them, but for some reason I decided to go ahead and buy one of these anyway. Big mistake.

I could not even get the installation CD to work correctly. I clicked on the admin installation, and a dialog box ("unpacking EAdmin") appeared and then quickly disappeared. The "Utilities Setup" dialog that was supposed to come up never did. I tried clicking on "Exit", and nothing happened. I had to use Windows Task Manager to kill the install.

After several repeats of this futility, I logged onto the Hawking web site to see if there was any help. I found the prodcut support page for the print server, which consisted of only downloads of updates (no FAQs or common problems info that I could see). I tried to download an updated admin program, and got a "corrupted program" when I tried to run it.

It was then that I checked out the Amazon reviews and found that even if I had gotten it to work I would have been disappointed by the speed and the lack of bidirectional communication. So I am packing it up and taking it back to Fry's. What a pain. Next time I will be sure to check the reviews here before buying anything.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too limited to keep, November 8, 2003
This review is from: Hawking Technology HPS1U 1 Port USB Internet Print Server (Personal Computers)
I had high hopes of sharing my Canon i850 printer, and the Hawking H-PS1U seemed to be the USB answer. Alas performance did not measure up to its looks. One, it was very, very slow. Two, it would not allow full bi-directional communication back to the computer. Three, it operated very hot. Did I say it was slow?

One email contact to tech support containing four questions brought no response. Another finally brought a minimal answer - disable bi-directional capability. No, I said, I need that capability, and if a user has to disable a feature he/she paid for to use your device, your product is deficient. A third email returned one more answer - the server meets thermal targets. A fourth and final email generated the most comprehensive answer, repeating earlier instructions but still not addressing all my questions.

So, if it does what you need, the Hawking is fine. If it doesn't, don't count on tech support for much help.
