5.0 out of 5 stars two brautigans in one day, May 9, 2009
between willard and his bowling trophies and the hawkline monster i didnt notice the the couple thousand kilometer trip i was making. except occasional glances.

richard brautigan writes the most hilarious books ive ever read. he also writes so simply and so profoundly deep about life that you cant help but laughing perhaps crying or just doing both.

if you want a good tale about monsters, twins, ghosts, sex, outlaws, and gothic houses then this is the one for you. do enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, fun, sexy romp!, March 2, 2004
Brautigan brings his trademark mixture of sex, violence, and absurdity to the western genre, and the result is a wonderful, if quick, read. Like so much of Brautigan, this book ends just when you're really enjoying it. The prose is casual and easygoing, the characters drawn with just enough ink to give them character. The plot is a tremendously goofy good time. And, of all the crazy things, a happy ending! Read it, it's loads of fun.

I first read this book in the '70s, shortly after it was published, and have re-read it several times. Of the four or five Brautigan novels I've read, The Hawkline Monster is my favorite; it has a goofy, Twiliight Zone-ish quality that just makes it fun to read. If you like stories that are off the beaten path, this one's for you!

One of Brautigan's best! A very funny and entertaining piece of literature.I can't for the life of me figure out why his books are out of print! As anyone who is familiar with any of Brautigan's work will attest /the man was a Genius! Hawkline monster will keep you entertained from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars the hawkline monster: a gothic western, February 15, 1998

i would have to say this is Richard Brautigan's best book. It has his great style of short chapters that usually are completely unnecessary. The two main characters, Greer and Cameron are very likable. I could not put this book down. I kept telling myself "one more chapter" until i finished the book. then i read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars unique, simple, profound and funny, February 25, 2012
nobody writes like brautigan! absolutely nobody! if you haven't read him, i recommend you start. i won't waste time with a synopsis. most of his stories defy description. you have to experience them and see for yourself. his style of counter-culture literature was a mainstay of the psychodelic literary diet of the '60s and serves as an influence base of some of the recent bizarro fiction of recent times. suffice to say this is not the typical gothic western. sure there are some gun-slinging outlaws, and beautiful twin daughters of a deceased mad scientist (one of which sometimes turns into an indian girl), gigantic butlers who shrink when they die and of course, sex........and there's mystery and of course a monster who hides in the ice caves. brautigan's style was very simplistic, but there is a profundity to his writing that cannot be ignored. there is a certain meloncholy to his prose, but his stories are immensely funny. and his vivid imagination.....where does he come up with this stuff??? you just can't figure out where these stories come from. brautigan was a troubled soul and his eventual rather gruesome and morbid suicide was a tragic shock to us all. but at least he left behind a treasure trove of his unique, profound, simple, sad, hilarious, wonderful stories. brautigan is one of my all-time favorite writers because of his unique gift. and this book is a great example of why he is one of the greats!!!

I think this book made me who I am. I'm serious. If you knew me, you might think that was a good thing. Might.
I am going to make a film interpretation of this, the best Brautigan story. I won't do a bad job, I promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, November 12, 2008
This isn't like most of Brautigan. It's really creepy but also funny. I can't understand why it hasn't been made into a movie, because there are great roles in it for both men and women and the suspense is thick enough to eat.
