Came across this author while searching for others by his name. This is the fictional recounting of a brief dark era in New Zealand's annals when the wild mountainous public lands of the south island were opened up to elk hunters. Akin to America's decimation of its buffalo herds a century before, HAWKS (they hunted from helicopters & hauled their kills out the same way) is haunting, with just enough rich characterizations & insights into the history & scenery.
