I was fortunate to lay my hands on a pre-publication copy of "Hawks" and it cost me hours of lost sleep. I couldn't put it down. Reisig lays a solid foundation of war-torn England and the very different types of men who all but signed their own death warrants every day they took to the skies in defense of that country. Then he whisks them off to a place with different, but strangely similar troubles, of violent conflict, sacrifice, romantic love, bravery, vile evil, treachery, greed and forgiveness. It's a rollercoaster of excitement, thrills but with a message worth remembering. This book is smoother and better written than Reisig's first novel, "The New Madrid Run," and the characters have more depth and substance, but he has not lost his gift of story telling on a huge graphic scale. All of the detailed action, suspense, glory and excitment are still there. "The Hawks of Kamalon" is an action movie, sci-fi thriller, and heart-felt romance just waiting to play in your head. Reisig just keeps getting better and better!

Let me start this review by simply saying that Michael Reisig is one of the best new storytellers that I have read in recent years! Having read his extremely impressive apocalyptic novel, "The New Madrid Run", a few years ago, I was pleased to finally find a copy of "The Hawks of Kamalon". What Reisig has created in this book is a novel of epic proportions. He has created memorable characters entwined in a gripping and thrill-a-minute plot. Take a novel that thrusts WWII pilots from the British and US Air Force into a cosmic world located light years away, throw in battle scenes taken straight out of the Battle of Britain and The Alamo and you've got "Hawks...". The novel really takes off when the pilots are drawn through a time portal to serve as the last-ditch heroes for a nation under seige by an evil dictator. Using their WWII Spitfires and P-51's to fill the skies with bombs and bullets to protect their new friends, they soon find themselves drawn closer to these people than they expected to be. In a book filled with multiple heroes, Reisig does a fine job keeping all of the characters straight in the reader's mind while making an unbelieveable sci-fi premise, almost believeable. "Hawks..." is a classic tale of good vs. evil and much of the action is straight out of a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne movie. The battle scenes are very graphic and create vivid word pictures. And while the "escape from the throes of death" scenes that the heroes keep surviving are more than a little far-fetched, (reminded me a lot of the Matthew Reilly books, so his fans will love "Hawks...") this is a book filled with action, romance, and energy. Unlike many reviewers who rave about not being able to put down certain novels, I rarely have experienced that sensation. It's for that reason that I was so impressed with "Hawks...". It really is "un-put-down-able"! Here's hoping that Michael Reisig continues to write great stories like "Hawks..." and "The New Madrid Run" and begins to get the recognition on a national basis that he deserves for being a great storyteller! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

Genre fiction at its best,

After 15 years of buying books on Amazon.com, I'm writing my first review following a sleepless night of reading The Hawks of Kamalon. The story is thoughtful and the characters well developed. But what makes the book so magnetic is how well this is accomplished through its string of expertly crafted action sequences. It's impossible to put this book down. And the sci-fi premise actually just provides launchpad for a character-driven narrative about the heroic potential of individuals, regardless of their backgrounds (or planetary origin). A simply enjoyable read that really needs a sequel.

Reisig is one of the best story tellers around. "Hawks" is a real true adventure story .. but mixed in is love, both for country, mankind and between man and woman. This book should be on everyone's "must read" list. And with it should go his "Madrid Run." I'm totally sold on this writer - this story teller. He does it with both finesse and boldness, never leaving a reader hanging in the air wondering what the story is all about.

Reading Michael Reisig books is similar to listening to the oral story tellers of old. You quickly forget you are reading and fall into the spell of the story being told to you. It's a grand thing to find a writer like Reisig who's narrative leads you deeper and deeper into his story and it's characters. "Hawks" is a masterful book. My copy was dog-eared from my two readings, and is now back on my shelf after three friends insisted on reading it. Long live the Hawks of Kamalon!

I just finished reading "The Hawks of Kamalon" and I couldn't believe it was over, I wanted it to go on and on. This book was filled with adventure, romance and a lot of excitement. From the very beginning I found myself up in the planes with them flying in a deminsion where everything is different from anything else I have ever known. Through this whole book I felt that I was there with them. It is a very good book that can carry you away with it to wherever it goes and leaves you wanting more. GET THIS BOOK and you will lose a few nights sleep, not wanting to put it down. Thanks again for the adventure.

Just finished reading "The Hawks of Kamalon". It is as good if not better than "The New Madrid Run". Each character has its own story and each is interwoven with the others. The further you get into the book, the harder it is to put down.

The best prose is born in poetry, and the best poets know the depths of the heart and human spirit. Michael Reisig, with his first two novels, is forging a legacy that the best may one day strive to match. Reisig demonstrates amazing insight into that which lies deep in all of us, which can move us to the highest acts of love, courage, and heroism. He paints familiar and foreign landscapes with the sensitivity of a poet, then blazes those landscapes with non-stop, heart pounding action! Reisig's first novel, The New Madrid Run, was a page-turner that kept me awake and surging with adrenalin till dawn. Yet it was just a warm-up for The Hawks of Kamalon. Michael combines bold, heroic action with authentic historical detail. He knows the flying qualities and capabilities of a P-51 Mustang as well as Bob Hoover, and spins an adventure-morality tale with an audacity worthy of Bob Heinlein. With these two books Reisig shows he has embraced the art of the action thriller, and that he can carry drama, plot, and high-strung suspense from the first page to the last. But more, the serious student of writing would do well to study the powerful subtlety of Reisig's mastery of metaphor, which is skillfully crafted and evokes depths of association that strike one chord after another within the reader, until a symphony of emotion resonates within by the end of the book. Using the poet's art, Reisig has taken The Hawks of Kamalon one step beyond a great read, to a stirring epic. Great fun! I wait anxiously, confidently, for his next offering.
