Book Description

October 1, 2006 Severn House Large Print
Another installment in the popular saga of the Hamilton family of Ballydown - Rose Hamilton, in her fifties and a grandmother, has much to be thankful for in the steady love of her husband John and their relative prosperity. But she is concerned for her children: Sarah, recently widowed, is burdened with grief, while Sam, married to cold, selfish Martha, is struggling to bring up his six children. Only Hannah, happily married and living in England, causes Rose no worry, though she misses her dreadfully.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As Doughty returns to the story of the Hamiltons of Ballydown, Ireland, it's 1912, and Rose and John are grandparents. One son, James, remains estranged. The other, Sam, has a growing brood of children but not much else with his domineering wife. Daughter Hannah is happily married and living in England. The youngest daughter, Sarah, still lives near her parents, but she has lost her beloved husband and is now raising two young children and trying, along with her father, to oversee her husband's four mills. To complicate matters, Ireland is in turmoil. Unions are calling for strikes, Catholics and Protestants are coming to blows, and Europe is inching toward all-out war. Sarah realizes that she is not so much in over her head as she is not doing what makes her happy. Will she be able to change her life? Doughty writes with expertise and warmth, conveying emotion and rendering fascinating period details. Maria Hatton
