Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Amazon.com

Haydn's two cello concertos have always been dearly loved by cellists, and the first one (in C) was the outstanding musical discovery of the 1950s. It is an earlier but finer work than the Concerto in D (No. 2), although, to be fair to Haydn, the Second Concerto is most often performed in later editors' horrible arrangements that obscure many of the finer qualities of the original. Here, played by an enthusiastic band of period-instrument folks, they have more energy and color than you could possibly imagine. At its very best, the "authentic" instrument approach really can make the music sound fresh and new. Pieter Wispelwey and Florilegium get full credit for treating these concertos with the vitality and commitment that they deserve. --David Hurwitz

Haydn's cello concerto in C is one of my favorite works from the classical period, and Florilegium perform a brisk, spirited rendition of it. I believe this is the only period instruments recording currently available on the market - which is too bad. Wispelwey is an excellent soloist, though, and while his cadenza is peculiarly modern sounding, the playing throughout is delicious. Tempos are distressingly breakneck (the final allegro molto is the fastest I've ever heard) but this can be a lot of fun if you don't get too uptight about it. The chamber transcription of Symphony 104 is an odd choice for a coupling, and while the players are all very skilled and have a fine sound, the main draw here is the C major concerto. Rostropovich's recording with the ASMF is a steel-string rendition that is fairly colorful, but you're much better off with this flashy but well-considered period performance.

This review is about the first piece only (Haydn's Concerto in C). I have not yet listened to the other tracks.

Exciting reading of this piece. Wispelwey tends to take the tempi very very fast, so this wouldn't be my first choice for someone hearing this piece for the first time. However, the fast tempo is definitely exciting for someone who knows what they are listening for. It's a nice change from some of the overly staid, pristine readings of this piece that are out there.

However, some nuance is lost in the shuffle. He misses a few chances to really bring out some of the details, so the overall impression after it's all over is one of an ambitious, youthful, brash, slightly egotistical "I can play this faster than you can" performance that you might hear during a competition rather than a more thoughtful rendition you might hear at a recital or with an "old master."

Overall, it's a nice listen. Not a reference recording, but a refreshing performance nonetheless.
