This review is from: Haydn: The Favorite Concertos (Audio CD)
Marsalis does an excellent job on Haydn's famous E-flat major concerto and Yo Yo Ma is precise in performing the D-Major concerto for Cello. These two are some of Haydn's best concertos and having such accomplished artists performing them is wonderful.
The third concerto, Violin Concerto #1 owes a great deal to C.P.E. Bach with the strong unison stretches and harsh repeating rythms typical of the Northern German style. Even so, this piece has its charm even though it won't be considered one of Haydn's masterpieces from his more mature period. Cho-Lian Lin does a good job on the violin. Though Haydn isn't known for his concertos, these three give you a good overview of some of Haydn's best concertos. I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com |
