This review is from: Haydn: London Symphonies Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
Hickox and his musicians are equally fine in this first volume and the second volume. Here the introductory percussive fanfare in "Drumroll" sets the stage for an energetic performance. "London" shines throughout with the same energy. And the cello solo in No. 95 really has an authentic presence. These performances have a real punch to them: part of it has to do with the sound the original instruments make together. Christopher Hogwood's "Surprise" is my all-time favorite Haydn performance. These are very close. Hickox inspires his performers, and the acoustics capture the inspiration. Altogether it's a pleasing homage to the jovial spirit and sweet purity of Haydn's music.
