5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Recording By A Great Artist, March 8, 2006

This review is from: Haydn & Mozart Discoveries (Audio CD)
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has enjoyed success as a performer and the praise of critics. He's admired by both fans and colleagues because of his musical abilities and his artistry. This collection from DECCA, another in its Classic Recitals series, shows why he is such a beloved musician. On this disc, he performs pieces that were largely unknown when he recorded the original LP and are probably still unfamiliar to most listeners. The first four arias are from Haydn operas that are rarely if ever performed. He also includes Mozart songs, one of which has a Turkish flair that could be straight from THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO (Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail). He also includes some rarities from Mozart operas that are occasionally performed today and concludes with an aria from LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, the only well known track and perhaps not the strongest piece of the recording.

Listeners will appreciate Fischer-Dieskau's well trained vocal instrument with its tremendous range and great tonal quality. I'm sure many who will be purchasing this recording once owned the original LP. Others will be purchasing it for the rare musical pieces of the set. Still others, those of us who love these performers from one of opera's great ages, will purchase it for the great voice of Fischer-Dieskau. For all of us who do purchase this set, we will once again fall in love with a great and wonderful voice.
