Ax has been a Haydn devotee for most of his career, having also recorded at least one dozen solo sonatas. He clearly loves this music which
is either unknown to or "insulted and injured" by too many others. My favorite exceptions remain Haebler/ Philips,
Michelle Bogner/Erato, Argerich/EMI and the still criminally neglected Malcolm Frager. There is a about a twenty year gap between the concerti #s 3 and 4 and
the great 1794 #11 in D-a contemporary of the London symphonies. The first two are attractive and not without merit but the D major
concerto is a perfect work. Ax does not prettify the three and avoids any HIP orthodoxy. In #11 he is sufficiently vigorous in the outer movements
and reflective in the second movement. For Haydn lovers his Haydn is essential

Once again I am grateful to other Amazon listeners for pointing out the excellence of a recording I easily might have missed. Emanuel Ax does not give us the fastest, the most percussive, the most historically informed, or the most dramatic performance of these marvelous concertos. He does however give us the most musical, joyful, and respectful of the composer's special genius. Ax's instrument is beautifully recorded, too. Even after a number of close listenings I find nothing tired or hackneyed in either the music or Ax's performance of it. The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra offers good accompaniment, though it is not as well recorded as the solo instrument.

For lovers of good piano playing and the high classical style this is a recording that is hard to beat.
