5.0 out of 5 stars no human can ever have created - either composed or performed - anything more beautiful, March 1, 2010

Not only is the music enchanting and moving - such freedom, invention, form, and harmony! - but the recording is natural sounding with natural ambience, as well as offering an intimate perspective. How could any soul or any god hate a race that can produce such moody food, fit for angels! A scandal that the 2 discs are so inexpensive! I just discovered had a defective track from a year ago, and was delighted that I could repurchase it for a measly dollar, and offer this encomium!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Haydn, November 26, 2010

This review is from: Haydn: Piano Concertos/Piano Sonatas (Audio CD)
I can't imagine music being performed any better. The only question would have to be whether one actually likes the music as written. Certainly Pletnev is up to the challenge and delivers both concerti and sonatas which are first rate performances. Pletnev is one sensational pianist!

franz jospeh haydn was not a pianist, composing his works for the piano for the virtuosi around him, including many works for private buyers--remember in his day, women were not allowed to pursue professional music careers, so haydn had quite an "amateur" public to write for! the piano concertos are not the star here, even though they are wonderfully performed by mikhail pletnev and the deutsche kammerphilharmonie. the real reason to purchase this inexpensive twofer is the sampling haydn's piano sonatas. haydn wrote over 60 sonatas, and mr. pletnev has chosen three of the later ones for performance here. haydn's gift for exciting, yet moving composition is readily apparent here. this is music that holds your attention and leaves you hungry for more. truly exceptional!
