Haydn for the Masses (of amateur quartet players),

This review is from: Haydn: String Quartets, Opp. 20 & 33; The Seven Last Words of Our Savior (Audio CD)
Many of us own pieces of Haydn's string quartet writings: favorites or collections in score, parts and/or recorded formats. I have found it daunting to complete the set of recordings, expensive and piecemeal and finally never completed. TheQuatuor Mosaiques on the Naive label have combined the complete string quartets in several boxed groupings for what I think is a pretty reasonable price (or set of prices). The group is a "period" ensemble with a nice palette of colors and a contemporary sensibility about historical style. They don't hit any grand slam home runs, but they make solid musical contact on every work. And you can really get a sense of the trajectory of H's quartet concepts. For me, a pretty happy couple hundred bucks worth of sound. |
