This review is from: Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 49, 52 & 58 (Audio CD)
Thomas Fey has slowly been recording what is planned to be a complete cycle of the Haydn symphonies with the Heidelberger Sinfoniker for Hanssler. This - volume 6 - is one of the best. Those who have acquired previous issues in this series will know what to expect. These are highly exciting, vivid, occasionally brusque performances of three Haydn "Sturm und Drang" masterpieces. Those who prefer their Haydn more "civilized" and elegent should probably stay away. Fey's aggressive approach coupled with the sonority of the period instrument orchestra can sometimes produce harsh sounds. Fey emphasizes the rustic, peasant-like, and rough-edged aspect of the music. And for those of us who see this an essential component of Haydn's music (and part of what makes it look forward to Beethoven's), these performances are must-own. This is playing of bold strokes and sharp articulation with prominent harpsichord continuo and explosive horns. Highly recommended.
