It is both sad and puzzling that DG has not re-released any of the Orpheus Haydn recordings. These are simply the best performances of the Imperial (53) and the Hunt (73) on record. Number 79 (though nameless, the greatest of these three works) is also beautifully played, but I haven't heard any other recordings to compare it to (it has not been much recorded). As for the lack of a conductor - there was no such thing as a conductor when Haydn wrote his 104+ symphonies!

As usual the Orpheus CO plays with great verve and clarity. They do ornament fairly lightly in #s 53 and 73, unlike Neville Marriner in his excellent ASMF version (see my review). Sadly, neither group plays my fevorite alternate version (by far) of the #53 Finale. Actually, Marriner did employ it in his first #53 on Philips lp, coupled with a fine #52, but neither reading has been
reissued on compact disc. Paul Sacher/VSO do use it in their wonderful #53 -coupled with a great #67. Otherwise, Both #53 and 73 with Orpheus are excellent. The first three movements are packed with invention, especially the theme and variation second movement.I do prefer Marriner in #73-it is quite similar to Orpheus but unebellished. Most important, #53 and 73 are two of Haydn's
greatest symphponies pre #82. #s 70,73, and 75 are my favorites between #s 70 and 80 (#78 is close). #73 is expecially fertile melodically and ends with a grest hunt finale adumbrating the great hunting chorus of The Seasons. I am less attracted to #79 which
sounds bland musically to me but is peformed very well also. Orpheus recorded #s 77-81 (77 with 44, 78 with 102, 80 with 22 and 63,and 81 with 45. I find them all superb, and would recommend Adam Fischer's versions as well as the Mackerras/Australian CO in
#s 80 and 81. Of the five, I find #79 the weakest, but that should not weigh against the other four, which are well worth knowing.
Peers; #s 53,73, 79- Adam Fischer/Nimbus
#53: Marriner/ASMF/Philips, Sacher/VSO
#73: Marriner/ASMF/Philips

Of the two reviewers who have preceded me, one argues that the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra needs a conductor to instill passion while the other marvels at the ensemble's playing. Let me break the present tie by coming down strongly in favor of Orpheus as it is, or at least was in these recordings. They are part of about a seven disc series of largely middle Haydn symphonies that the ensemble recorded more than twenty years ago. It is a marvel that the group is able to do what it does without a conductor, but there it is. (Actually, the orchestra does use group processes to hammer out interpretations.) I highly recommend all the orchestra's Haydn recordings, if you can find them in decent shape -- Arkiv Music offers its own reissues of all. The playing has all the verve, amiability and litheness one could hope for in renditions of these works. It's a shame they haven't recorded more Haydn, but be grateful for what they have left for us so far.

The symphonies of Haydn need a conductor, in my opinion. This CD features two of Haydn better known works, Symphonies Nos.53 and 73. Sym. No. 53 is a beautiful work that reaches its peak in its amazing finale. No. 73 is one of Haydn's masterworks and quite famous for its outrageous finale. No. 79 sounds like Haydn is spoofing himself. There are so many musical jokes in this work, it will keep you wondering what is really going on here. The playing of Orpheus on this CD is extremely close to total perfection. These works could not be played any better. However, the performances lack passion, the type of passion a conductor could bring to the music. This CD is currently unavailable and the cheapest version available from private sources is $28.00. I cannot think of any CD worth that much money, especially since CDs are routinely reissued. Save your money and buy a different recording, one that has a conductor.
