Book Description

1572492503 978-1572492509 December 2001
When Bucky and Jimmy enlisted in Colonel Thomas Kane’s Bucktail Regiment at Smethport, Pennsylvania, in April of 1861, they had no idea of the dangers they would endure before they ever plunged into battle. An encounter with a den of timber rattlers, a wild raft ride down a whitewater river, and a fight-to-the-death with a murderous lumberjack recruit were just a few of the pitfalls dotting their path to war. But the war’s combat does come to them as they experience that for which their sacrifices and adventures have been preparing them.

Hayfoot, Strawfoot: The Bucktail Recruits is a must read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, the Civil War, and action-packed adventure. Researched from the double perspectives of history and folklore, this book gives a vivid account of the birth of a famous Union rifle regiment and the coming of age of two young frontier recruits.

Robertson and Rimer enlist the reader to join two innocent boys from a backwater hamlet, marching off to the turmoil of the American Civil War. One is a rough-hewn child of the outdoors, and the other a pampered preacher’s son. They quickly bond to face the pain of adolescence, the rigors of army life, the sting of prejudice, and the hope for glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Civil War historical novel is a winner, July 4, 2004
This review is from: Hayfoot, Strawfoot: The Bucktail Recruits (White Mane Kids) (Paperback)
This is aimed at younger readers, but I found it well written, an engrossing romp through the unpopulated areas of North Central Pennsylvania. Set in 1861, and based on fact, the authors weave a captivating tale of uneducated backwoodsmen going off to fight in the Civil War. The title comes from the men not knowing left from right, so to teach marching, hay was tied to left foot, straw to right. An excellent first novel for these writers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great young adult civil war novel, December 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hayfoot, Strawfoot: The Bucktail Recruits (White Mane Kids) (Paperback)
Forget that this was published with junior high boys as the target audience. This is great accurate historical fiction. Bucky Culp the tough 1/2 breed illiterate son of a solitary deep woods hunter and Jimmy Jewett is soft but very intelligent, idealistic son of a Methodist minister are the main characters. The novel easily flows from a few years before the war through under aged enlistment in 13th Pennsylvania Reserves "The Bucktails" to the battles around Dranesville. The details of frontier and military life will please the most strict students of guns, history or the outdoors. The way even supporting cast grow and adapt to new stimuli will make any Lit teacher smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hayfoot, Strawfoot The Bucktail Recruits, June 22, 2011
This review is from: Hayfoot, Strawfoot: The Bucktail Recruits (White Mane Kids) (Paperback)
What an exciting adventure story! I picked up the book and decided to read it, although my book preference is not typically historical fiction. To my surprise, I was unable to lay the book down. Chapter after chapter was filled with surprise, excitement, and suspense. The Bucktail recruit characters, but especially Bucky and Jimmy, were extremely authentic. Their loyalty to one another and the remaining recruits tugged at my heart. The author's writing style and knowledge of the subject was exceptional. I would highly recommend Hayfoot, Strawfoot to junior high students, but is certainly of interest to anyone.
