4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for the home mechanic
I bought this manual along with a video to learn how this "mystery device" works, and to rebuild my own transmission. It shows in detail step by step photos of complete teardown and assembly for the Ford C3, C4, C5, C6, and AOD transmissions. 2.0 out of 5 stars Great for older Fords
In its prime, this was probably a good manual. However, time marches on and this manual has not kept pace. The newer Ford automatics from the early 90's on are not covered. If you want info for earlier models, this would be a good reference, otherwise, you'll likely be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for the home mechanic, October 30, 1999
This review is from: The Haynes Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul Manual (Techbook Series) (Paperback)
I bought this manual along with a video to learn how this "mystery device" works, and to rebuild my own transmission. It shows in detail step by step photos of complete teardown and assembly for the Ford C3, C4, C5, C6, and AOD transmissions. It also lists all necessary tools required to perform the overhaul as well as manufacturers who make them. I've bought numerous Haynes manuals in the past and this one is as supurbly informative as the rest. Buy it, do it yourself, and save hundreds of $$$.

4.0 out of 5 stars De-mystify working on your Ford Tranny, August 16, 2001

Using this manual, I was able to easily disassembly and rebuild my C6 transmission using basic tools with limited need for "specialty" tools. The book explains in detail what to do for each transmission, what special tools you'll need and what special tools you WON'T need. I bought the overhaul kit from a local shop, this book and a few simple tools I needed an excuse to buy and I was off. The book has good info on diagnosing problems as well as very detailed step by step instructions with pictures. A very useful tool for the home mechanic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reading is Fundamental, June 18, 2006
This book is not for the A4OD or the A4LD. It is for, among others, the AOD transmission. If you don't know the difference between an AOD and a A4OD, then you should perhaps just bring it to a repair shop and let at least the semi-amateurs work on it for you. Buy this book for the repair of an AOD, not a blender, it might prove useful.
Haynes manuals have always been straight forward and basic, coving the basic operations to get the job done, assuming no extraordinary conditions exist. This manual would be a great reference, for the first timer who needs more of a basic operational understanding of the LISTED transmissions, in preparation for an overhaul.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useless for the Aerostar, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Haynes Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul Manual (Techbook Series) (Paperback)
This manual does not include information for the A4LD transmission used in the 86-87 Aerostar, which is odd to me because the book was published in 1996. With all the Aerostars on the road and given the fact that they are notorious for having tranny problems, one would think that Haynes would have included a section on it in the repair manual, but not so. :(

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, April 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this manual is not very detailed,if you were to work on the valve body for instance, this manual is useless.also the troubleshooting is way too basic,no details, the symtoms and possible problem sources are not detailed,i think this manual could have been a lot better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not real thorough book, March 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book only really covers tear down and build up, There is not a lot of inspection. I really don't see the point of rebuilding a transmission just to put bad parts back in. Not a lot of pictures on the build up side either. I think that I expected more because I have used ASTG transmission manuals before. I would save your money and buy an ASTG manual.

I have had a really good look through this manual and it seems to be exactly what I need to overhaul my geargox. I am actually not ready to do so yet, but will keep you posted about my progress once this I commence the overhaul. I am impressed with the very clear pictures and the lengthy explanations on how to do everything. So here's hoping that all goes well at this end!!! Cheers
