Edit: I decided to come back and add some information to my review with regard to issues with the instructions. Hopefully this will help others who purchase this kit. Our kit instructions and parts list indicate that the timing belt idler pulley is a chrome part number 30. Our kit did not contain a part number 30 but it did have a part number 41 (not on the parts list at all) that looked a lot like an idler pulley. Looking at photos of the kit it seems clear that the manufacturer is substituting this new non-chromed part 41 for the old part number 30. An addendum in the instructions would be nice but, if you get this kit and find part 30 missing -- just use part 41 in its place and all will be good. The other mistake we found was that the part numbers for the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys are reversed but the only-fits-one-way construction on that step made sure we didn't mess up.

I built the Renwal V8 with my dad (the motorized version with the "working" plugs) when I was a kid and loved the experience. Since Revell no longer makes the motorized V8 I thought that I would try this kit with my son (he's 13). We had a great time working on this together. I loved that the whole kit goes together with pressure-fit parts and screws. No glue necessary. I would have gone five stars except the engine has a tendency to seize every once in a while -- but I think I remember the old V8 doing that too.

One tip: lubricate everything liberally. The tolerances on most parts are good but, as with a real engine, there are lots of "moving parts" and that means opportunities for things to catch or friction to get the better of the small electric motor that turns the crank shaft.

With a couple exceptions, the instructions were clear. When we found ourselves puzzling over a step it was almost always a matter of us getting in a hurry and not taking the time to thoroughly read the written instructions as well as looking at the pictures.

I reviewed a number of other brands and was not happy with the reviews. The reviews on the UK site of this model was very high, so we decided to check it out. My Son loves picking at all things... so this was a cool gift. He was able to put the whole thing together in 2 nights and is still tinkering with it. He is delighted with the working parts. Each "cylinder" lights up, the fan turns, the moving parts are cool. He is now wanting to build bigger engines. It is a great model and highly recommend.

I bought this for my son as a Christmas gift. It has lights for sparkplugs and you can see the parts move inside. I bought this as an educational tool/toy for him to learn the parts and function of the internal combustion engine. no glue required. the parts screw together. A screwdriver and instruction manual are included in the kit.

I bought this to build with my son and I would consider it a good buy for a father/son project. I am mostly satisfied with a few comments.

It didn't require any glue, which is nice, but the screwdriver that came with it was too weak to effectively screw in the tiny screws that come with it (it actually started to fall apart). I had to get out my own precision screwdriver to make get it together.

Also, towards the end of the instruction sheet it just seemed like the team just gave up due to time or budget and left out some pictures that would be helpful to those trying to build this.

Finally, the biggest problem was that the distributor that comes with it to turn the lights on and off was defective. Luckily I had read about this from another reviewer and shut it down as soon as the motor sounded strained and the lights weren't coming on.

You basically need to pull it apart and remove the plastic piece that rotates with a couple of ball bearings and a spring and place it back together so it rotates smooth. I don't know if they get unaligned during shipping or if it is just poor quality control. The center piece should rotate smoothly. If it doesn't you may have the same problem as me.

If you just want something that goes together without having to work through some issues I would buy something else. If you don't mind doing a little trouble shooting this is a pretty cool set.

I researched many models of this type since I had built a Revell V8 as a kid. Due to all the negative reviews of that particular model and problems with other similar models, I almost avoided all of them. I wanted one that was powered and had flashing spark plugs and was visible while operating. Saw that many people had problems with this version, but took the chance on the Haynes offering hoping that at least the instructions would be clear.

While it is smaller and only a straight four, it went together in about four hours completely assembeled by my 12 year old son. The only points that could have been clearer would be the orientation of some of the parts and it took some trail and error to figure out a few pieces. All in all a good experience and none of the issues reported,

I bought this for my 4 year old son. He's very interested in how things work. We built it with minimal problems. However, the electronics never worked. When the button is pushed we get the engine starting sound, but nothing moves. Very disappointing for my son. He was really excited to see our work pay off. I'm going to try to rig it to work with a power drill to salvage something for my son.
UPDATE- I contacted customer service and the immediately sent a replacement part completely free.
