5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Country Rock, May 17, 2006
This review is from: Haywire (Audio CD)
This five-member band from Pennsylvania plays melodic country rock that is representative of the direction that country rock is going today. This album is their sixth. It is refreshing to hear a band like Frog Holler that has been playing for a while and whose members have fun playing together.

Frog Holler's country rock is easy-going, but there is something more about this band that sets them apart from other country rockers - and I can't figure out whether it's the sincere lyrics or the smooth guitars. Perhaps it's both. The song "On Winter Blues" is a lyrical gem.

Take a break from Tom Petty and check out Frog Holler, you'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful album from a group on the way up!, April 6, 2006

I love this album. Every song. These guys just keep getting better and better.

The song writing talents of Darren Schlappich are improving with age. This

group from Reading, Pa. started out doing mostly bluegrass and now are

doing a broader range of styles--all done well. I look forward to seeing these

guys live someday. Check out frogholler.com to find out more.

I really enjoy this album, took alittle time to grasp the direction Frogholler is going with their music but Darren is still writing excellent songs and performing them even better live. If you haven't seen Frogholler live it's a must see!

Mr. Shelton makes some good points about Frog Holler that I totally agree with. The website Frogholler.com has some MP3's that are from every album definately something to check out. Also on the website is a schedule of upcoming shows check it out!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD- Buy it if you like "Intelligent Country", December 1, 2009
This review is from: Haywire (Audio CD)
"Intelligent Country" is my personal tag for bands ranging from I see Hawks in LA, The Court and Spark, Drive-By Truckers, Radney Foster, and the Everybodyfields. Great artists with a country feel, but also with a brain on their shoulders and a message to send. Frog Holler, despite its odd name, fits squarely into this camp. I was lucky enough to grab this CD at a discount, and I am grateful that I did.

Let me be clear: There's not a bad track on this CD. However, there are a few standout tracks for me, namely "One Last Time", "Terms and Conditions", "Sight Unseen" and "Ben Franklin's Blues". There are hints of classic rock in here (Skynyrd, The Band, etc.) along with the great guitar work that comes with them. Fortunately, that's not all there is. There are plenty of bands trying to hack out an existince parroting that past, and Frog Holler is not one of them. In Haywire there is an earnest attempt to branch out into new territory... namely, introspective country ballads. The feeling that I get from this CD is that Frog Holler wants us to accompany them on this trip into self-aware territory, where we learn something about our own feelings (while having a great time doing so).

"We'd rather be free/understanding our rights/We'd rather be free/than tucked in at night"

Bless their hearts.
