About the Author

) The Andalusian philosopher and author of Hayy bin Yaqdhan, Abu Bakr Mohammed bin Abdul Malik bin Tufail, was born in Wadi Ash (now Guadix) east of Granada at around the beginning of the twelfth century of the Christian era. He died in Marrakesh in 1184.

He was vizier and chamberlain at the Granada court and later personal physician to the Almohade Sultan Abu Ya’qoub Yousuf in Marrakesh.

The philosopher Ibn Rushd - known in the West as Averroes - was one of his pupils.

J.M. Budd lives in England and is a freelance Arabic to English translator.
