4.0 out of 5 stars I still play this album today
When I found this album in the store, I picked it up right away. DJ Premier mixed (NOT produced) these rare underground gems like a pre-Bad Boy G-Dep on "Head Over Wheels", J-Live's classic, "Braggin' Writes", L the Head Toucha's "Too Complex" (its chorus comes from a De La Soul/Common song), and my favorite two-in-a-row, Godfather Don's...

3.0 out of 5 stars no question Premo's one of the top hip hop producers...
but dude should've chosen Godfather Don's "Styles by the Gram" and gotten a more recent Co Flow track for this collection...supplying a new beat under the J-Live acapell was nice, but Finsta Bundy sounded better back when they were freestyling on Mr Cee's wax, and that was more than a while back, i was hoping for Premo to just take the acapells and lay his...

When I found this album in the store, I picked it up right away. DJ Premier mixed (NOT produced) these rare underground gems like a pre-Bad Boy G-Dep on "Head Over Wheels", J-Live's classic, "Braggin' Writes", L the Head Toucha's "Too Complex" (its chorus comes from a De La Soul/Common song), and my favorite two-in-a-row, Godfather Don's "Properties of Steel" and Brainsick Mob's "Mixmaster". You can find also find younger versions of Natural Elements, O.C., and Pharoahe Monch on this album, and even the interludes with Primo talking to Mr. Dave are entertaining. I knocked a star off my rating because "Too Complex" has skips in it, and it's not the CD itself, it's the actual song that skips. Also, the interlude after that song feels like it should have followed "Head Over Wheels" because Mr. Dave is talking about that song in this interlude. Otherwise, all of the songs on here are classics. When is Reality Check 202, like Primo advertised, gonna drop?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mix Tape, January 2, 2006
This review is from: Haze Presents Ny Reality Check 101 (Audio CD)
Even though Premier doesn't lace the tracks on here, he definitely shows why he's the greatest DJ in the game. The mixing and scratching are flawless on this and the way it's formatted, you feel your listening to an underground show on the radio. With that said, the lineup is superb too. There's L Da Headtoucha, J-Live, Company Flow just to name a few. All real MC's, not the fake crap like 50 Cent, or I guess at that time Puff Daddy, aka Diddy. Great beats and flows, and great work of blending and mixing, which show's just how talented Premier is. And the one interview where DJ Premier speaks about how there are times where he's down to his last buck or so, and if it's choosing between getting food and getting a 12", he'd get the 12". That show's how much love he has for the game. I didn't quote it exact, but that was the gist of it. Anyways, this is a must have. Now, someone said they hope they get reality check 202, I think it may be out there. All I know is, I hope it's not like his Holiday Massacre cd. That sucked. It had 50 and G-Unit and Bun B. What the f--k? I hope DJ Premier goes back to cd's like this and not the Holliday Massacre, because this cd represents the DJ Premier we all came to love.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best hip-hop compilations., October 28, 2006
This review is from: Haze Presents Ny Reality Check 101 (Audio CD)
DJ Premier is Primo when it comes to comp lp's. This is the best underground rap comp I've heard. They sure are charging a grip for old DJ Premier stuff these days. Limewire Pro has all of it. It's very tempting. However, other sites such as MusicStack have some of these old comps for better prices if you're a collector. DJ Premier has many old school colaborations and comps worth checking out. My favorite projects of his are his colaboration with Group Home on the song 'Suspended In Time' and his work with Showbiz & AG on songs 'You Know Now' and 'Next Level' off the album 'Good Fellas', another overpriced OOP album. His compilation 'Crates' or 'Premo' series are also great. They're full of old school and some new gems you probably haven't heard. 'Crates Vol. 2' is the best I've heard if you can find it. Happy listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST IN UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP, April 16, 2000

This albumn is what all compilation albumns should look to as an example. I thought this would be tight but when I heard it I was blown away. The production is real tight but the strength behind this record is in the mcs abilities to show case their amazing talent. Check out my favorite track "braggin writes" by J-live, he rips the mic like I never heard. Other tight tracks include Street Smartz "metal Thangz" with OC and Pharoahe Monch and L the head toucha's "Too Complex". Every track on this albumn will keep your ears wide open. So dont sleep on the underground and pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately a must have for true hip hop headz!, November 6, 1999

Dope s**T! This is just another album that proves that primo outshines all other producers and dj's in the hip hop industry. If you don't know who Premier is, I suggest you order all (yes all of them) the Gangstarr albums and get yourself some education. Phat album, overall, definately worth buying.
