Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–Sophie's family needs a new couch. After a full day of searching, they finally find one that is just right. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, it comes with an odd-looking creature that just sits in the middle of the cushion. Resembling one of Jim Henson's Muppets, the creature, readers learn, suffers from upholsterosis and on doctor's orders that they get him out more, the family takes the sofa and the newcomer on a cross-country journey. Slonim's very funny picture book will appeal to children with a taste for the zany. Told from Sophie's point of view, the understated text is often at hilarious juxtaposition with the illustrations. The colorful artwork will appeal to fans of David Shannon's work as will the tongue-in-cheek storytelling. Libraries looking for a book that generates laughs need look no further.–Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA

I fell in love with this story even before reading the text, thanks to Slonim's quirky illustrations. Slonim is a master at tucking fun onto every page -- whether adding fangs to the goldfish in the bowl at "Larry's 24 Hour Rummage" lot, or couch-shaped boulders to the Grand Canyon when the family takes their new couch-stuck guest there in the hope that he'll "get out more." At heart, this sweet picture book is about acceptance, friendship, and being open to new adventures. Slonim is well on his way to becoming an extraordinary storyteller.

This is a favorite of my girls', ages 4 and 6. It's the story of a little girl named Sophie who sets out on a quest with her mom and dad for a new couch. They find one, but it comes with a cute, Jim Henson-type "person-thing" sitting on it, and he won't budge or speak. Sophie befriends him anyway and she and her family try to help him get over his acute case of "upolsterosis". In the end, the "thing" helps Sophie and her family in a very selfless and heart-warming way. It's a bit off-the-wall and full of humor and visual stimuli that will really click for those who are paying attention. It shows just how powerful and healing love and acceptance can be.

He Came With the Couch tells the story of Sophie and her family, who find themselves in need of a new couch after the family dog, Roscoe, destroys the old one. They pick up a suitable couch at a rummage sale -- but it happens to come with a silent blue creature who is not budging despite the parents' best efforts to relocate him. By the end, of course, they are happy to make him part of the family. This story is quite subtle -- much of the action occurs in the pictures and the text is rather sparse. That's not a complaint -- my 3 year old understood the story perfectly -- just a heads up to parents who may wish to spend some time talking about what goes on in the illustrations. My 3 year old finds the whole story quite hilarious, from the way the dog destroys the couch, to the last line: "She came with the chair!," which she likes to shout out. A great book for some family fun at reading time.

My kids and I read this book as part of the required reading for my son's kindergarten class. We fell in love with it and knew we had to order it. This book has remained one of his favorites throughout the year and even though he knows whats coming at the end, I still see his eyes light up when he gets to the last page, just as they did the first time. I love this book because it is adorable, has great illustrations and does not contain anything that I wouldn't want my kids to see. The story is simple but cute and is great for even the smallest children. If you have a younger child, this would make a great gift. One of my favorites.

Who could resist a title like, He Came with the Couch? In this book. the family needed a new couch. They looked high and low until they found the perfect couch. It only had one problem. It came with a...well it's hard to say what that is on the couch. The family tries everything to get rid of the thing that came with the couch. But in the end, the thing proves itself to be useful.

The illustrations are colorful. The story is nonsensical fun. The ending is wonderful and worthy of a great laugh. This is a wonderfully entertaining and creative book that is appropriate for all ages.

The theme of acceptance has been delivered in a wonderfully unique story that brings a huge grin to the face of reader and "readee" alike. I came across this book while on vacation and couldn't wait to deliver it to the 3year old little person that was having a birthday. The fun illustrations are absolutely delightful and a joy for whoever is turning the pages.
