Book Description

Bob Sikes' autobigraphy spans an era of incredible change. His boyhood in the impoverished rural South of kerosene lamps, outhouses and water toted in from the well, was followed by a meteroric career rise during the Depression and election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1940.

His 38 years in Congress encompassed the development of the nuclear world, computers, lasers and space travel Roosevelt was his first president, Jimmy Carter his last, and the years between were filled with colorful national and international characters. Famous or infamous, Sikes deals with them all candidly and sometimes irreverently. Inside stories of political power struggles and international crises are interwoven with lively tales of the good life in northwest Florida's Panhandle, and hunting and fishing adventures around the world.

About the Author

Bob Sikes, Florida's legendary He-Coon, died in 1994 at age 88 of malnutrition, dehydration, and Alzheimer's disease. The limited remaining copies of his autobiography, long out of print, were locked up for years by his much younger third wife. After a bitter estate battle, those limited remaining copies are now available.

Robert L. F. Sikes of Crestview, Florida, was born in Isabella, Worth County, Georgia. After graduation from the University of Georgia in 1927, a teaching and research fellowship at the University of Florida led to an MS in 1929 and permanent residence in Florida. By 1937, he was owner and publisher of two weekly newspapers and serving the first of two terms in the Florida State Legislature.

In 1940, he was elected to the first of 19 consecutive terms in the U. S. House of Representatives. He rose through the ranks to become the third ranking member of the powerful Appropriations Committee and Chairman of the Military Construction Subcommittee. He attained the rank of Major General before his retirement from the U. S. Army Reserve.

His career was devoted to the development of Northwest Florida and the preservation of a strong national defense.
