Editorial Reviews

Los Angeles-based Dum Dum Girls follow up their fuzzy, girl group-inspired Sub Pop debut I Will Be with He Gets Me High, an EP composed of three originals and a cover of swooning Smiths' classic "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." Lead singer/songwriter Dee Dee, Richard Gotteher (who also worked on I Will Be and is best known for penning "My Boyfriend's Back" and "I Want Candy"), and Sune Rose Wagner of the Raveonettes produced the EP.

I loved I Will Be and was happy to find that I like this EP even more. As the other reviewer noted, the third track is the "weakest" of the three--it's still a great track, but Dum Dum Girls excel at faster paced, percussion-driven songs, or maybe that's just my taste. I hate labeling bands, and yeah, they're very 60s-girl-group-meets-alt-garage-band, but they're also fresh, unique, innovative, talented, and most definitely worth a listen. I am looking forward to their next release and if this EP is any indication of things to come, I won't be disappointed.

The first thing that popped into my mind after putting on He Gets Me High the first time was that if the first album was steeped in '60s girl groups coupled with a garage setting, then HGMH is bubbling over with an infectious 80s pop sensibility that makes the first couple of tracks feel like they could be placed in a John Hughes soundtrack. (Meant in the best possible way, of course.) The vocals also seemed clearer, which fit the new nuances of the sound. After the third song, which is the weak point of this short release, There is a Light That Never Goes Out finished things off in tremendous fashion. Truly a wonderful cover. I don't know how much, if any, of this will be on Dum Dum Girls' next album, but I can say that the EP is worth purchasing and putting on repeat.

There are so few bands that have the tenacity to pull off so many music genres and make each song sound spectacular, yet somewhat unpolished. In this case, the surf-grunge-house-rock-fuzz guitar-60's punk throwback contained on this EP really reminds me of Nirvana and Sonic Youth. Dee Dee's voice is soft and plush, yet firm.

The producer behind all of the 4 tracks (Richard G.) is the very same person that produced Blondie's 1976 self-titled debut and their 1977 follow up, "Plastic Letters." The Dum Dum Girls also just released their 2014 recording, "Too True", a few months ago. This band is truly worth checking out. :)

A wonderful sound SubPop is lucky to have this band on the label. This is a band with a great deal of growth potential, I'm in.
