Editorial Reviews

This CD was a long awaited debut CD by one of Hawaii's Premier groups. Holunape presents traditional Hawaiian music performed in the style of the 1940's and 1950's. The members of the group are: Kama Hopkins, Keola Kaluhiwa, and Kanai'a Nakamura. Holunape won Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for this excellent album: Group of the Year and Hawaiian Language Album of the Year. This album will make a nice addition to any collection of Hawaiian music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great New "Old" Hawaiian Combo!, November 15, 2007

Kimo Kapulu (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: He 'Olu (Audio CD)
If you listened to Hawaiian music in the 40s-60s - and liked it a lot - you'll love this CD. Hawaiian Airlines was featuring Holunape in their on board video presentation and I was happy to hear the sound of Hawaiian music that I grew up with. The three members of Holunape, Jeremy Hopkins, Kekoa Kaluhiwa and Brad Nakamura harmonize well in the traditional Hawaiian style, and include the necessary falsetto parts. Ukulele, guitar, upright bass, Hawaiian steel guitar and various incidental percussion provide that light, enjoyable "Mai Tai at the beach" sound. If you were in Hawaii in the 50s and 60s on "Boat Day" you would have heard this type of music everywhere welcoming the disembarking tourists. I have a good sized library of Hawaiian music and this is my current favorite. Try it - you'll like it!
