Review

"Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States," notes probation officer Michael Groetsch, founder of the first court-based program in Louisiana to specialize in domestic violence cases. President Clinton expressed his concern that domestic violence is the largest killer of adult women in the United States and should be studied and fought as aggressively as any other life-threatening disease. Groetsch has taken the President's words seriously by studying the topic for more than 20 years and interviewing 20,000 batterers and their victims. He views domestic violence as a chronic and often fatal disease but is hopeful that its cure can be effected if its symptoms are recognized early and the victims and batterers receive adequate and timely treatment. Part 1 of his book aids victims in identifying the type of batterer they are involved with by supplying a chart called the "Batterer's Continuum" that lists the characteristics of the least dangerous, moderately dangerous, and very dangerous batterers. Types of batterers are detailed through explanatory text and case studies. Part 2 deals with helping women leave abusive relationships. An understanding of the processes of ending abusive relationships is given through case studies and useful facts about what type of treatment is available, developing a safety plan, and how to get the police and courts to help. Cogent advice is offered on the topics of whether to choose treatment or prosecution for the batterer, and how to get prosecutors to believe the victim, as well as explanations of legal terms, restraining orders, and affidavits. The protection and emotional health of children as well as the part close friends and family members play as advocates for the victim. A helpful appendix lists hotline phone numbers, emergency bag preparations, and a questionnaire - "How Dangerous Is Your Relationship?" Groetsch combines straight facts, research findings, and practical advice with an understanding of the psychological and emotional factors that underlie domestic violence. This work will be helpful to anyone who is personally or professionally involved with it unfortunately a very large number. -- From Independent Publisher

5.0 out of 5 stars He Promised He'd Stop, August 17, 2007
This review is from: He Promised He'd Stop: Helping Women Find Safe Passage from Abusive Relationships (Paperback)
Michael Groetsch's book, He Promised He'd Stop, helped save my life and my mind. As a probation officer he has a great deal of experience. He makes the situations and risks very direct and very plain. The book is divided into types of battterers: remorseful, sporadic, and serial. He provides dangerousness accessment tools, personal examples, warnings, and probabilities of offences and re-offences. Absolutely a necessity for women in or coming out of domestic abuse or violence.
