Book Description

When it comes to relationships, couples often run into similar challenges. Do any of these sound familiar to you? She Said: I want to talk with him about issues like the kids, his mother, and the frustration I feel about balancing my career with being a good mom. But every time I try to bring up these subjects, he either closes down or gets angry. I don't want him to fix the problems, I just want to be able to talk with him about our lives. He Said: I stopped feeling connected in my marriage many years ago, but I just don't trust myself to make the right decision about staying or leaving, so I just stay stuck. She Said: Sure, I love him as a person, but I'm just not "in love" with him anymore. If these challenges sound familiar, this book is for you! Couples Counselor, Barbara J. Peters, offers simple ideas and approaches for re-framing the way you look at the interactions and situations in your relationship. As Norman Vincent Peale once said,"Change your thoughts and you change your world."

Having been married to the same wife for decades, I remain on the lookout for advice about love and marriage that strikes me as realistic. Fortunately, in this book Barbara Peters provides frank, witty, and creative solutions for couples facing marital problems.

Both the format and the writing style will appeal to readers. Even though she cites other relationship authorities, the book never lapses into textbook dryness.

A sample of her clarity, combined with solid counsel: "Remember, communication is so much more than words, and if the way you deliver your words or present yourself isn't in alignment with what you are saying, your partner will hear the loudest statement. For instance, if you are saying loving words in a harsh tone of voice with body language indicating irritation, your significant other will 'hear' the irritation much more than the actual words themselves."

Peters sustains a candid tone: "No two human beings can always understand each other or will always be able to communicate in healthy, productive ways. There will be times that attempts at talking will escalate into confrontations that don't seem to be going anywhere." Again, "Life isn't always easy, predictable, or even fair."

Repeatedly, Barbara Peters helps couples realize that while they may not recapture the pulsating, all-consuming desire they felt during their courtship, their marriage will last--and even improve--when they seek intimacy of a different kind. She writes: "The first and most crucial step to rebuilding lost intimacy is to recognize, accept, and admit your relationship is not what you both want it to be, but knowing you both have the power to change it. Only then will you be open to experiences and opportunities facilitated by change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Ton of Insight August 8, 2011
This book is an easy read and it has something for everyone. Peters breaks her book down into several categories: Communication, Trust, Forgiveness, Intimacy, Acceptance, Friendship, and Love. As I mentioned, Hubby and I have had our fair share of communication issues so I found myself focusing mainly on that section. There were a couple of things that made me say "ah ha!" that I couldn't wait to show him. There were also some things that made me cringe and hope that he wouldn't see them (he did, since he read the book as well).

It may just be in my head, but I really feel like we're communicating better now. I find myself reacting much more calmly when we have a break down in communication and I think this book came at a good time for us. 2.0 out of 5 stars Did not hold my interest September 2, 2013
By Patsy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I expected to read two sides to every issue (He said, she said) and how the therapist helped resolve the issue (I said). Instead, he (or she) related an issue and the therapist gave her opinion without benefit of the other side. I found that the therapists advice was pretty much "in a perfect world, this is the way it should be" without taking male (or female) human nature into consideration. Not practical.

3.0 out of 5 stars He Said She Said September 4, 2013

This book is a practical guide to relationships. For those who haven't read much on the subject it could be a helpful tool. I found it elementary since I have read several books on the subject. It didn't give me info that was new or cutting edge.

I did not find this book helpful. The way it is written is not that readable. I hoped for more sophisticated advice and did not find the advice at a level I found helpful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two Languages..his & hers ? August 27, 2013

Not the original book I thought it was when recommended by family counselor. Seems to have author commenting on the advice. I did not like the third person perspective.

Doesn't address abusive behavior, mental health red flags or any serious marital relationship issues. Lightweight and clearly written for White Baby Boomers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not great August 29, 2013

Pretty mediocre on the whole. If you want some serious scientific info, look up Debra Tannen. The premise is good but delivery lacks something.

More About the Author

"We are all works in progress, like an unfinished novel. I help people realize they have the ability to take authorship of their lives....Because the best parts are the ones they haven't written yet."

Barbara Peters is a gifted communicator with a laser beam ability to cut through the tangle of personal drama to get results and relationships that last a lifetime. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, her counseling style is interactive, respectful, non-judgmental, and supportive. "A large part of my practice is dedicated to working with couples. In my experience, most relationships can be saved, but romantic relationships are always evolving, so they need to be worked on constantly. You need to do that with the right tools."

In her first book, The Gift of A Lifetime: Building a Marriage that Lasts, Barbara lends insight from her years of experience as a couples' counselor to give people those essential tools and guide them on successfully using them. "When that happens, love and respect are restored and couples can reclaim a fulfilling relationship," she explains. The messages in the book can make the difference between having a second honeymoon or seeking a divorce attorney.

In her second book, Barbara focuses directly on the issues of communication, trust, forgiveness, intimacy, acceptance, friendship, and love, with a unique approach from three perspectives: The man's, the woman's, and Barbara's (the counselor's). He Said, She Said, I Said is a book that truly shows how one's thoughts can impact behavior and create misunderstanding.

Barbara's most recent book is a romance novel: Never Too Old for Romance, now in kindle edition. It tells a story of how love and romance can happen at any age, and follows one woman's quest to rediscover herself in ways she had forgotten existed. It explores the many issues affecting mature women and how growing older can take on a new perspective.

Barbara received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from C.W. Post College of Long Island University, a Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from Stony Brook University, and earned a Master of Science in Counseling from Georgia State University. She is certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors and a member of The Licensed Professional Counselors of Georgia.
Barbara's collaborative and supportive style of therapy starts with truth. Personal truth.

"I'm as authentic as they come, so I encourage the same from my clients," Barbara says. "That dynamic of honesty and trust between counselor and client is vital to the success of the counseling process. When you can strip away self-doubt and defenses and come to a session with a genuine desire to work through an issue, there is a 100% guarantee of positive change. I get that commitment consistently from my clients, and in return, my clients get the results they need."

A Long Island native, Barbara has made Georgia her home for the last twenty-seven years; her private counseling practice is in Cumming, GA. She is devoted to her family of two grown daughters, four grandchildren, and a Shih Tzu named Gingerlily who often accompanies her to work.
