COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!,
This review is from: He Say, She Say (Mass Market Paperback)
It was the fastest read ever for me. I could NOT put this book down. I was always anxious to see what the next person would say. It was written beautifully and kept my interest THE WHOLE TIME! I was so impressed, I ordered "Bebe's by golly wow". I know it's going to be the bomb!

I thought the book wasn't that interesting,

I felt that the writer could have done more with the characters and storyline of the book. I also did not like the way the chapter's were split up into the character's thoughts instead of flowing together. It took me a while to finish the book because no part really gripped me. I just finished it to find out what happened in the end although I should've just read the last chapters. I honestly don't think this book was worth the time I spent to read it.

Feelings and Emotions,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: He Say, She Say (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. Now as I get older I will know what to think as far as relationships, best friends, the type of relationships an young adult will have. When I first saw this book I thought it was going to be boring! But never judge a book by its cover. Soon as I started reading this book it got good the first chapter I did not want to put the book down. I wonder what made the author Yolanda Joe to write such a good book. These characters in this book have different personalities and I really liked that. I will try my best to read other books from Yolanda Joe. As I get older I will see different personalities as far as relationships.

This was not a thick book but for some reason it took me several weeks to complete. One of the reasons I did complete this book is because I try to finish what I begin... I felt the author was trying to write like the voice of a man.. Many times during the story I found myself wondering do men really talk like that? Perhaps they do? There was not much of a plot and over all it was not a terrible book, just not all that exciting... I love to read but this was not one of the best books that I have ever read.

BETCHA can't put this one down,
This review is from: He Say, She Say (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book in one day. It was quick reading for me. I liked the characters, they were easy to relate with. I also liked how she split up the characters voices by chapters which takes real talent to write that way. I really liked the characters and laughed with them, cried with them, rejoiced with them. I could see both sides of the situations too - from the sistahs to the brotahs. So, if you want a light read, and something good. Pick this one up, and i guarantee you won't want to put it down when you're finished.

Thouroughly disgusted with false interpretations of blacks,

He Say, She Say was a complete waste of time. Yolanda Joe tries to capture her youth by overdoing the "hip slang" in the book. That is the least of her problems. For a woman to be as naive and ridiculously feeble as one of our four narrators, Sandy, is absolutely absurd. Joe's emphasis on silly spats shows how juvenile her characters are, and how simplistic she is. Rather than make one believe her protagonists personas, she slowly trudges along with inane garbage that have nothing to do with anything else. When Bebe gets a new hairstyle, there is a major focus on it, clearly displaying her characters adolescent views on people. Her constant references to skin tone and hair texture get old fast, unless this book was supposed to accucentuate how these women feel superior or inferior because of thir respective traits. I found myself angry reading this trash and only finished it just because I'd already bought it. I will not read Bebe's By Golly Wow after this waste of time and energy.

Pretty Good,

This review is from: He Say, She Say (Hardcover)
This book was pretty good. It takes a while to actually into the book however, once you do it is sort of hard to put it down. I do like the way that the different characters were portrayed. However this book to me did not have much of a plot, at least not until the end. Overall it was a pretty good book

Yuck!,

This review is from: He Say, She Say (Mass Market Paperback)
This book made me sick to my stomach. How a woman like Sandy could be so dumb & desperate is beyond me. What sane woman would put up with this type of junk? The characters were not well developed & the ending was dumb. Sandy should have dumped T.J. & kept rolling. But no, her desperate behind just had to anything just to keep a man in her corner.

There's a 'home run' here!,
This review is from: He Say, She Say (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a book about relationships. It is full of camaraderie, sisterhood, male/female bond and above all the father/son bond. It is not without the darker side to relationships as displayed by Tia and also Speed and Ann.
I liked the format the author chose for her story, which is told by four different narrators. The style is easy going, interesting and effective. Often the reader can see the same scene from two different viewpoints. There are two main plots, closely intertwined. I also appreciated the author's descriptions and her humour as well as the way she slipped in some real life issues and people. The author hits a 'home run' with that scene between TJ and his Dad when they admit their love for each other.I think men seldom do this. When TJ declares "it's cool for a man to have fathered a son but it's even better for a son to have a father around" (99) this touch a realistic nerve which is undeniable. The book ends on a success note - Bebe's graduation and perhaps the end of her sabbatical! Cheers! Also check out "What Goes Around..." and "Beneath the Surface" by Paula Aird. |
