Often overlooked in Elvis Presley's career is his love of the Southern gospel tradition, though he had hits with actual gospel tunes ("You'll Never Walk Alone") and some simply steeped in gospel sensibilities ("In the Ghetto"). He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley features music and interviews with contemporaries talking of Elvis's determination to keep gospel part of his repertoire; once he angered Ed Sullivan by insisting on performing "Peace in the Valley" on his show despite Sullivan's instructions not to. There are many gems ("Where Could I Go," "How Great Thou Art") and some hunks of cheese ("Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" from The Trouble with Girls). This could have been a strong two-hour documentary, but unfortunately the producers padded it into three, meaning some clips make multiple appearances. --Anne Hurley

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME Look at Elvis! March 20, 2002
Format:DVD
This documentary is the most enlightening and informative look at the REAL Elvis Presley that I have ever seen! It tells so much more about the MAN than any other documentary, book, magazine, etc. has ever told about the IMAGE. Elvis once said that "It's hard to live up to an image.", and although he's been captured by society as the "image" of the "King of Rock 'N Roll" (watch this DVD to find out what he has to say about that!), there was so much more to him than simply his "image". He was a man who loved God, loved gospel music, and had a deep, genuine faith. This DVD captures the essence of the REAL Elvis, allowing fans and spectators alike to see more of who he really was, how he really felt, and what he really valued than anything that's ever been produced about him before. If you like Elvis, you'll LOVE this DVD! If you think you know Elvis, you need to watch this DVD! If you love God and HIS music, you need to get this DVD so you can enjoy the enormous talent and soul-felt performances by the legendary Elvis Presley as he sings about his God and his faith! Elvis was a man blessed of God with a tremendous talent and a world of opportunitiy to share it in, but he was also a man who was imprisoned by his fame, and tortured by the loneliness that this caused. He wasn't perfect, but he was blessed, and he knew it. Watch this DVD to see how real his faith was to him, and how desperately he leaned on it to make it through the difficult days of his "Fame and Fortune", his days of "Hurt", and his struggles as he sought "Peace in the Valley". This is a wonderful documentary! Don't miss it! Get yours today!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and emotional unique look at the King. May 30, 2004
Format:DVD
I have always loved Elvis' Gospel music. This DVD shows an indepth look into the Spiritual life of Elvis and his love and longing to love the Lord. I found the interviews to be very inspiring and hopeful for Elvis' salvation. One interview with one of the Sweet Inspirations tells of Elvis and praying and laying hands for healing on one of the girls because she had an tumor which she was healed of.
Any fan of E who wants to know the deepest workings of the man must have this DVD to understand him and trials. One book quotes his aunt believing Elvis did all his drugs because of the guilt of his life style. With that said remember these things Elvis died reading Insearch of the Face of Jesus and the King of Rock and Roll won 3 Grammies ALL for GOSPEL music!!! GOD bless you all JB

I caught this biography on my local PBS station. I was almost moved to tears, as He Touched Me brought to life the spirituality and faith of Elvis Presley. Here was not the Elvis of the tabloids or the Elvis of popular assumption. Here was an Elvis that was entirely down-to-earth, a man who performed and sang with real conviction and real faith behind his words. As told in the biography, Elvis once stopped a concert midway to point out to screaming fans in the first row that, despite their sign proclaiming him King, he was not, and that God was. He Touched Me is full of inspiring revelations of the Elvis we all think we know.

5.0 out of 5 stars And I'm an atheist ! June 14, 2006

I was surfing one night and came across airing on PBS. I love Elvis so I watched. I am not religious but I now own this DVD and CD (as well as "Amazing Grace-His Greatest Sacred Performances"). These songs are the only ones that truly showcase what a great voice Elvis had. Only these Gospel recordings let you hear how great he was vocally. If you really like to hear Elvis SING you have to get his Gospel works to really appreciate his voice. If you like his voice but aren't religious, trust me you can tough it out. Belief or not, the sentiment is beautiful and the vocals make it more so.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Touched Me - The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley May 12, 2005
Format:DVD
This is a great (2) disk DVD set that shows a side of Elvis that was not as well known as the "King of Rock & Roll" side was. Many of the King's closest friends and work companions give insight into his true first love, singing Gospel music. Elvis is shown as a deeply spiritual person who spent many hours singing hymns with friends. Thsi is truly a great and moving DVD for listeners of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Touched Me December 8, 2007
Format:DVD
I loved this DVD set. There were a lot of interesting details of Elvis' spiritual recordings and interviews with friends and musicians who were involved. The title is apt for this video. I would highly recommend it to fans of Elvis and those who may just be curious about the man or what inspired him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Concept - Poor Execution February 18, 2005
Format:DVD
The concept is good- Elvis singing gospel with commentary. What will leave Elvis fan very dissapointed is the fact that his songs are cut off for the sake of commentary. This is a common complaint. What could have been a great DVD is now severely flawed in it's execution and will leave Elvis fans exasperated and pulling their hair out. Considering that his Gospel music was the only music that won him Grammy awards and is arguably some of his best and most inspired work- Elvis fans deserve better. Email or contact the licensing Executive (currently Irene Houston- 800-238-2000) at Elvis Presley Enterprises (Corporate Division)and make your request that this be re-released as a Collector's Edition with full length songs.
