Editorial Reviews

Review

"Erhardt’s book is a long-awaited and essential contribution to the literature on transgender people and their families, revealing the nuanced experiences of women who love men who cross the gender binary and live as, or express themselves as, women…This book will provide essential insight for clinicians and lay readers alike on gender transgression in families and the power of committed loving partnerships. The myth that marriages to transgender people are doomed to failure has been put to rest. Erhardt’s book will hopefully guide clinical theory to better serve families struggling with the lifecycle upheaval of transgender emergence."  – Arlene Istar Lev LCSW, CASAC, The American Journal of Family Therapy

"Recognizing the voices, feelings and experiences of these women is a significant contribution to the evolution of trans-understanding within family studies…These individual stories bring out larger culturally constructed gender norms, privilege presence, and offer ways to express feelings and needs in romantic relationships…..The relationships discussed in Head Over Heels are complex and life-altering, but all benefit from honest expressions of feelings and needs. Presence from the heart can move relationships beyond the head, and the heels."  – Jessie Stewart, Journal of GLBT Family Studies

"Head over Heals: Women who Stay with Cross-Dressers and Transsexuals" is a provocatively, attention-getting title that is sure to appeal to men who are understandably concerned about what their wives and lovers think of cross-dressing and their transgendered or bi-gendered natures. This book delivers real-world stories, written by wives, about their husbands, their own lives, and how they have evolved through SARAH (Shock, Anger, Resentment, Acceptance, and even Hope). Edited by a sympathetic genetic female Ph.D. who clearly knows a little about the subject, this is a must-read for husbands and wives who want to stay together and learn to not only tolerate, but perhaps even appreciate, gender variances. Some stories are heart-wrenching, some will make you upset at intolerance, and most will leave you thinking that most wives are focused more on their own feelings than their husband's (very difficult) situation, but it is important to note (as we do with Helen Boyd's excellent "My Husband Betty") that crossdressers and T's of various flavors, who are married, are in a tango of two - and it takes two to tango. Recommended.

I read this book to make sure that my wife would receive a positive message before suggesting it to her. She found out after eight years of marriage a secret that I have been hiding all my life. She has been supportive but sees her life turned upside down unsure of what the future holds. Most stories online end in a divorce. To her credit she has been supportive and tries to understand what even I myself don't. I think this will only help her as I found it helpful to me as well in understanding what she is going through.

This might give you hope about you're relationship if you are a crossdresser/transgendered (MtF) person or the partner of one. Not gloom and doom, but generally positive examples of people who love each other and can accommodate their partner's need for transgender expression. From partners of crossdressers, transgenderists & transexual women.

the book is well put together. covers subject for both sides and is not slanted to one side or the other. explains that it is not a choice but some thing you are born with and that it should be dealt with together and not as enemies.
